Job Summary

This job opening is for a Temporary Float RN position within the Central Staffing Resource Department (CSR) and ECMO

Wage: $55.00/hr. base rate
Evening Shift Differential is $5.00 per hour 
Night Shift Differential is $3.00 per hour
Weekend Differential is $5.00 per hour

Responsibilities*

Provide ongoing ECMO support to all patient populations served at the University of Michigan (neonate, pediatric, adult).  Provide inpatient staffing support to assist in maintaining all ECMO operations under variable conditions including but not limited to dramatic upward shifts in ECMO census, unexpected changes in patient acuity, inpatient support of current ECMO patients to facilitate full time staff to perform ECMO initiations, in-house ECMO transports and out of hospital ECMO transports and cannulations.  

  • Maintain and monitor sufficiency of ECMO support for patients on ECMO in the Pediatric ICU, Peds Cardio Thoracic ICU, Neonatal ICU, Surgical ICU, and Adult Cardiovascular ICU.
  • Assess ECMO circuit integrity and assist in ECMO circuit interventions under the supervision and direction of a full-time ECMO specialist.  
  • Make bubble free connections to the ECMO circuit to facilitate IV medications through the circuit.
  • Maintain ECMO support in compliance with physician driven parameters.  
  • Participates in semiannual ECMO simulations
  • Maintains compliance with regulatory learnings and requirements.  
  • Effectively use and concise documentation utilizing MiChart EMR.
  • Thorough understanding of hemodynamics and dual ECMO physiology
  • Successful completion of a 2?3 week orientation
  • Commit to working 24 per 4-week scheduling period to maintain competency with duties and responsibilities.

Supervision Received:

  • This position reports to the Clinical Nursing Director and Nursing Supervisor
  • Reports to the charge ECMO specialist for clinical issues during shifts

Supervision Exercised:

  • None
     

Required Qualifications*

  • Current licensure to practice nursing in the state of Michigan.
  • BLS
  • 3 years of ICU experience at urban/academic medical center with an ELSO member ECMO program.

Desired Qualifications*

  • BSN preferred
  • Prior ECMO specialist experience that includes manipulating flow and sweep settings independently
  • Prior pediatric ECMO experience with pediatric patient populations
  • ECMO certification through AMSECT or ELSO
  • Experience with commonly used ECMO circuits such as but not limited to Cardiohelp, Centrimag, Vital Flow, Spectrum Medical

Work Schedule

12 Hour Shifts, Day/Nights

Please Note:

  • Expected to float to like units where competent and qualified in times of decreased activity
  • Inability to work for three (3) months consecutively will lead to automatic termination from employment at Michigan Medicine.
  • No guarantee of work at any time, and shifts can, and sometimes will be cancelled.
  • No weekend requirement, but may be scheduled for weekends
  • Variable shifts

TEMPORARY FLOAT NURSE GUIDELINES
1). All CSR employees are required to attend an annual educational Blitz to complete required
UM mandatories and compentencies (BCLS every 2 yrs, Cardiac Arrest and maintain all
other applicable certifications).
2). Temporary Float Nurses are expected to work all shifts requested unless no work is
available. It is the intention that all Temps will float to all units within the cluster speciality.
3). A Temporary Nurse should work 32 hours per 4 week schedule block. You may request four
(4), eight (8), ten (10) or twelve (12) hour shifts in advance.
4.) Temporary Nurses in the CSR Clusters are NOT required to work weekends or holidays.
5). Temporary Nurses will participate in a newly designed, streamlined, onboarding/orientation
program. However, the progression of orientation will be dependent upon clinical
competency, staffing needs of the individual units, and the number of hours worked by the
Temporary RN.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
