Job Summary

The Overdose Prevention Engagement Network (OPEN) is a diverse team dedicated to improving lives and reducing harms of substance use. By engaging with individuals, communities, and organizations, the team shares education and resources to strengthen person-centered prevention, treatment, and recovery.

We are seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) to support the OPEN Warmline, a same-day telehealth service providing rapid access to buprenorphine for Michigan residents with opioid use disorder (OUD).

The RN Clinical Care Coordinator will work on a collaborative care team of prescribing providers, behavioral health specialists, and peer recovery coaches to ensure rapid telehealth access, medication initiation, follow-up support, and care coordination. 

Responsibilities*

1. Clinical Assessment & Patient Care 

  • Serve as frontline triage RN for individuals contacting the OPEN Warmline seeking treatment for opioid use disorder.
  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments via telephone or video to evaluate withdrawal symptoms, clinical status during buprenorphine initiation, medical stability, and behavioral health needs.
  • Provide patient education on medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), harm reduction strategies, overdose prevention, and naloxone access.
  • Conduct follow-up outreach to confirm medication receipt, assess treatment response, monitor side effects, and reinforce treatment engagement.
  • Triage urgent clinical concerns and escalate to prescribing clinicians as appropriate.

2. Care Coordination & Treatment Access

  • Coordinate and schedule same-day telehealth visits with OPEN Warmline prescribing clinicians.
  • Collaborate with prescribing clinicians to facilitate rapid initiation of buprenorphine, including support for safe initiation planning and withdrawal management.
  • Troubleshoot pharmacy and insurance barriers, including prior authorizations, to ensure timely and uninterrupted medication access.

3. Program Operations, Documentation & Quality Improvement 

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Track Warmline metrics and support reporting requirements associated with sponsored funding.
  • Participate in Warmline staff huddles, case consultations, team meetings, and continuous quality improvement efforts.
  • Stay current with evolving best practices in addiction medicine, telehealth delivery, and harm reduction.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated accountability and dependability including a good attendance record with punctuality.
  • Demonstrated adaptability to changing needs and priorities based on unit, department, and institutional goals/objectives.
  • Proficiency with typing and electronic health record documentation.
  • Ability to manage complex clinical issues utilizing assessment skills, protocols, and evidence-based interventions.
  • Actively participate and support performance improvement activities related to self, clinic, department, and institutional goals and objectives.

Required Qualifications*

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Michigan.
  • At least three (3) years in the last five (5) years of direct clinical experience in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment is required.
  • At least three (3) years in the last five (5) years of direct experience with medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including buprenorphine.
  • At least one (1) year in the last five (5) years of direct experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems and proficiency in clinical documentation.
  • At least one (1) year in the last five (5) years of direct experience performing clinical telephone triage and care coordination in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills as evidence by resume, annual evaluations, and references.
  • Demonstrated commitment to harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and culturally responsive practice as evidenced by resume.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience working with individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Familiarity with Michigan Medicaid plans, prepaid inpatient health plans, and statewide SUD treatment systems.
  • Experience addressing medication access barriers, including insurance authorization processes.

Actual RSAM LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.

RSAM levels range from CCC-COMPETENT-NE to CCC-EXPERT-NE to CCC-MASTERY-NE.

Work Schedule

  • 40 hours/week
  • Day shift, Monday through Friday 9:00 AM ? 5:30 PM
    • Working hours may evolve as the Warmline clinic expands. 
  • Location: Our office is located at the North Campus Research Complex in Ann Arbor. 
  • May have opportunities for hybrid remote.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
