Who We Are
The Planet Blue Ambassador Program?s (PBA) mission is to inspire and empower all U-M students, staff, & faculty to engage in sustainability and climate action by serving as a resource navigator and creating diverse sustainability learning experiences.
The UM-Dearborn Planet Blue Ambassador Program is housed in the Facilities Operations Department.
Job Summary
The student selected for this position supports the creation of high-quality content and strategic communications that align with the Planet Blue Ambassador Program's mission. The Sustainability Communications & Engagement Intern will create educational and promotional communications content, advertise events, and increase participation in the Planet Blue Ambassador program. This position reports to the Assistant Sustainability Programs Manager and will be mentored by the Student Sustainability Communications & Engagement Coordinator.
The selected candidate is expected to be reliable, enthusiastic about environmental stewardship and social impact, and have strong written and verbal communication skills. The position requires a 10-hour-per-week commitment from May to August 2026, with room for time off for vacations and the potential for extension and increased hours after August.
Responsibilities*
The person selected for this position may be asked to perform tasks beyond those listed below.
- Plan and execute all promotional needs for PBA-sponsored events, including creating flyer designs, writing event descriptions, posting on student engagement platforms, and sending regular campus-wide emails.
- Copywriting for our monthly Campus Sustainability Newsletter.
- Write content for our monthly Campus Sustainability Newsletter.
- Co-create an Instagram Engagement Strategy
- Plan and deploy Instagram content for our Sustainability at UM-Dearborn (@planetbluedearborn) account.
- Assist the Student Sustainability Communications & Engagement Coordinator in tracking and evaluating communications and engagement metrics.
- Support zero waste events as needed, including sorting recyclables, compostables, and waste.
- Help with our garden plots and compost system as necessary.
Required Qualifications*
- Current University of Michigan-Dearborn student.
- Familiarity with Canva and other design and communication tools such as Mailchimp, Adobe, and powerpoints.
- Experience with using Instagram in a professional capacity.
- Strong communications skills (writing, speaking, visual information graphics, etc.)
- Knowledgeable about sustainability, the environment, and climate action.
Desired Qualifications*
- Has completed the Planet Blue Ambassador training course.
- Enthusiastic, outgoing, and passionate about sustainability.
- Consistently professional with regard to communication, punctuality, and reliability.
- Dedicated work ethic with the motivation to lead a project and see it through to completion.
- Experience with communicating scientific topics to the general public.
- Strong computer skills, including Google applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides), Canvas, and Zoom.
- Plans to graduate in Winter/Spring 2027 or after.
How You'll Grow
The chosen candidate will gain experience in marketing, communications, environmental education, community engagement, and tracking engagement metrics. This internship is relevant to, but not limited to, those interested in the following career fields: environmental communications, journalism, media production, community engagement, public health, and public relations.
