Job Summary

Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Michigan seeks a highly motivated, collaborative, goal oriented, passionate recruitment professional to significantly enhance and support recruiting and outreach efforts to promote and bring undergraduate and graduate students to ECE. This position will manage all of the internal and external recruitment of students for ECE by leading the development and implementation of strategic student talent acquisition tactics and programming. Critical to achieving excellent results is the ability of the recruiter to build strong relationships and alliances and deliver results in a rapidly and constantly evolving environment. The recruiter must be able to establish and maintain a strong rapport with current and previous students, administration, faculty and other institutions to promote the mission and goals of ECE.

Responsibilities*

Recruitment and Outreach

  • Develop and assist with admissions events and projects, including making public presentations
  • Manage ECE's existing outreach programs such as: the Electrify Summer Camp Program in Ann Arbor and Detroit, on-site campus visits such as Campus Days, Majors Fairs, etc. as well as develop new programs
  • Further develop opportunities for local high school and middle school students and teachers to be exposed to Electrical and Computer Engineering including initiating planned outreach and engagement in learning as well as managing competition for high school and middle school students
  • Foster, develop, and continue to strengthen collaborative partnerships with school districts, community organizations, and STEM based youth organizations
  • Develop specific targeted recruitment of graduate students from national colleges and universities
  • Manage the ECE Student Ambassadors Program
  • Manage the ECE Call Recruitment Center, as well as the Alumni Applicant Connection program
  • Build long term relationships and establish faculty-to-faculty interactions at institutions whose students could apply to and attend ECE
  • Work to strengthen, build, and maintain strategic partnerships to provide opportunities for students from traditionally underrepresented and underserved communities to participate in programs designed to expose them to ECE
  • Serve as a resource for ECE faculty to link research efforts to K-12 opportunities to fulfill requirements for broadening participation within engineering research projects
  • Maintain a working knowledge of emerging national trends and best practices in the areas of outreach, pre-college initiatives, and STEM pedagogy as it relates to student success
  • Work with staff in ECE in industry and alumni relations, and with Communications to develop a united and cohesive brand for ECE to attract the best students
  • Organize virtual opportunities for prospective graduate students including information sessions and annual workshop to prepare for graduate school
  • Organize recruiting events for admitted graduate students including Master's Visit Day and Q&A sessions

Funding Identification Opportunities

  • Establish and/or identify additional graduate fellowships and undergraduate scholarships, internships, and co-op programs in coordination with the ECE industry liaison to recruit top students to ECE

Planning, Assessment, and Maintenance 

  • Serve as the ECE liaison to College of Engineering and Rackham offices to ensure coordinated recruiting and outreach efforts
  • Assist in the evaluation of the recruiting function, strategies, and procedures in order to find opportunities for improvement and growth
  • Manage various outreach data and generate reports on individuals and activities
  • In coordination with the ECE Communications & Marketing team, further develop, maintain, and manage ECE's recruiting and outreach websites and assist with the development of related social media strategies
  • Assist with the design and development of marketing and promotional materials
  • Assist with the collection and analysis of data, maintain program records, and monitor student progress
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or STEM field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Three or more years of experience in higher education recruitment or the equivalent
  • Marketing experience is highly preferred
  • Ability to present engineering concepts, especially in ECE, to students and parents while exhibiting excitement about what ECE can offer
  • Demonstrated experience with M-Pathways software or comparable higher education institution software systems (Oracle or PeopleSoft)
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment 
  • Ability to work with a large population of faculty, staff, and students
  • Demonstrated skill in fostering new relationships and marshaling professional networks
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to effectively and efficiently develop and execute several key projects while simultaneously setting priorities on emerging requirements and changing timelines
  • Ability to work and adapt in a fast paced changing environment 
  • Proven ability to manage projects from creation to successful completion
  • Willingness and ability to travel several weeks out of the year
  • Ability to move up to 50 lbs.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in engineering, preferably ECE or STEM field
  • Experience working with undergraduate or graduate students
  • Professional experience with admissions and transition services in higher education, including recruitment through orientation
  • Three or more years of developing and successfully using marketing initiatives to achieve prescribed goals
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures relating to student affairs
  • Evidence of progressively responsible and independent experience
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of Google Workspace
  • Understanding of social media platforms for reaching various audiences
  • Knowledge of student records and admissions/recruitment systems
