Job Summary
The engineering technician will provide engineering expertise for the design and development of physical simulators used for clinical skills and procedural training. The engineering technician will assist in the research, development, design, and testing of physical simulators. They will be expected to apply their engineering skills to apply and/or adapt procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to this end.
Responsibilities*
Working independently and/or with a small team of peers and faculty, design and develop products used in medical education, including, but not limited to, artificial organs or other devices that represent anatomic features and landmarks
- Apply rapid prototyping processes to evaluate feasible design options of newly-built simulators
- Apply a variety of technologies and processes, including, but not limited to, 3D printing, mold-making, and applications of silicon-based products
- Inspect, repair, calibrate, and maintain relevant equipment and materials required in the simulator build process
- Keep the lab area clean and orderly
- Monitor inventory of disposable supplies, and report needed materials for ordering
- Ensure safe operation and maintenance of equipment and materials used in the rapid prototyping process
- Create and update workflow (process) documents, and simulated tissue `recipes?
- Work closely with Clinical Simulation faculty and staff to coordinate integration of the prototype into curricula during the evaluation phase
- Assist in data collection as needed
- Obtain/ maintain UM IRB CITI (PEERRS) training
Required Qualifications*
- Working skills in basic 3D drafting software (Fusion 360, SolidWorks)
- Computer and networking knowledge (Windows 10, Mac OS, MS Office)
- Be an innovative thinker, highly motivated, able to work independently, and drive designs through completion
- Ability to multitask and maintain focus on priorities
- Ability to independently resolve most design questions and problems
- Works under minimal supervision
Desired Qualifications*
- Comfortable and effective working in rapid prototyping environment
- Working skills in in high-level 3D software(s) (Mimics, Magics)
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes, and agile development
- Ability to independently resolve most questions and problems and refer only the most complex issues to higher levels.
