Responsibilities*

  • Serve as a clinical resource and consultant in a multi-disciplinary setting to patients, families, nurses, and medical staff specializing in ostomy care, peristomal wound management, and complex wounds.
  • Perform daily phone and triage tasks in MiChart related to patient concerns, issues, and needs.
  • Care is focused on young adults, adult, and geriatric patient population. Pediatric care may also be provided. 
  • Collaborate with the nursing school and/or other groups, both inside and outside the institution, to support outpatient ostomy needs.
  • Perform pre-operative and post-operative care for patients and families, which includes education, surgical markings, and plans of care in the outpatient setting.
  • Provide consultation and recommendations of wound and ostomy care supplies and equipment.
  • Develop and maintain patient, family, and nursing education materials related to management of complex wounds, fistulas, and ostomy care.
  • Plan and implement educational programs for healthcare professionals (students, residents, fellows, etc.) to support professional development programs.
  • Participate in the development of institutional policies, procedures, and guidelines in keeping with evidenced-based practice and standards for nursing care of complex wounds, fistulas, and ostomies. 
  • Participate in quality assurance/quality improvement and evidenced-based practice initiatives related to ostomy and wound care.
  • Participate in department committee meetings to improve ostomy/wound care across the care continuum. 
  • Maintenance of professional wound/ostomy certifications

Required Qualifications*

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
  • Educational Requirement: (must meet one of the following):
    • Bachelors degree in Nursing OR
    • Associates degree/diploma in nursing AND a Masters degree in Nursing
       
  • Five (5) years of RN experience providing direct care to adult surgical patients
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience (within the last 5 years) of direct patient care to ostomy patients in the inpatient, outpatient, or home-care setting
  • Minimum of two (2) years being credentialed in wound and ostomy (CWON) nursing care by an accredited national certification board

Desired Qualifications*

  • WOCN certified
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience with complex patients in a critical setting (ICU or ED)
  • Ambulatory care experience preferred
  • Previous experience with the ordering and management of DME preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and work autonomously to prioritize patient care needs
  • Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking skills in daily practice through use of the nursing process
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and maintain professional working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to perform professional presentations/lectures
  • Two (2) or more years of recent (in last 5 years) experience with electronic medical records, specifically EPIC.  Computer/typing skills such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted under the Role-Specific Advancement Model (RSAM) as:
CCC- COMPETENT NE.
Actual RSAM LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
RSAM levels range from CCC-COMPETENT NE to CCC-EXPERT NE TO CCC-MASTERY NE or CCC-Mastery Plus NE.

Work Schedule

?         Hours per week: 40 hours

?        Shift: Days; Monday through Friday, variable shifts.Flexibility in scheduling is required.


Location: Taubman Center, Cancer Center, Brighton Center for Specialty Care, Dominos Farms, Chelsea Professional Building and other locations as needed based on divisional growth changes/strategies.  This is not a remote position.

All employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census or department needs.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
