Job Summary
The University of Michigan is seeking a full-time Advance Practice Professional to assist transplant surgeons and physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients in need of remedial and preventive medical care in the area of abdominal solid organ transplant.
Responsibilities*
This position will have inpatient and outpatient responsibilities as outlined below;
Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Medical / surgical management of early post-transplant kidney and liver patients (first 3 months post-operatively) in the outpatient clinic, including but not limited to management/treatment of: Wound and surgical interventions, immunosuppression, rejection and infection.
* Order and interpret diagnostic testing including, but not limited to: labs, EKG, CXR, renal US, liver ultrasound, abdominal US, CT, MRI/MRA, cardiac stress test.
* Assess, diagnose, and manage non txp abdominal surgical patients in the outpatient surgery clinic.
* Serve as a resource for the Pre and Post transplant nurses; provide continual education lectures; provide support to field in coming patient problems/concerns.
* Perform pre-operative history and physicals for living donor transplants.
* Cover Transplant Ambulatory Care Unit (TACU) for patients seen for urgent issues (surgical site infections; dehydration; transfusions; infusions)
* Write Discharge summaries and arrange for appropriate follow-up.
* Facilitate patients, disposition with clinic nurses and problem solve regarding admission, scheduling and chart review of patients.
* Conduct rounds on post-operative kidney/pancreas/liver transplant patients with continued monitoring of laboratory and diagnostic tests with documentation and plan of care.
* Consult other medical/surgical services for collaboration of care in the in-patient and outpatient setting.
* Discuss and evaluate data/results with attending physician(s).
* Completion of complication data on liver txp population.
* Participate in the development of policies, procedures, and protocols.
* Participate in continual Quality Improvement.
Required Qualifications*
NP
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
- Certification as an Acute Care Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care NP.
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or who has successfully completed all required Nurse Practitioner program coursework at an accredited Nurse Practitioner program to qualify to take their specialty certification exam.
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
- Current DEA registration required.
- BLS, ACLS required.
PA
- Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
- State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required.
- Current DEA registration required.
- BLS, ACLS required.

Desired Qualifications*
- 1 year or more of full-time Advanced Practice Provider (APP) experience with 50% or more clinical time spent working with surgical patients
- Management of Pre/Post Transplant patients within the last five years.
- Recent (within the last five years) APP experience working with adult surgical patients in an inpatient setting.
- APP experience prescribing and managing immunosuppression medications.
- Experience working in the ambulatory care setting
- Demonstrated expertise in facilitating the educational growth of others through previous clinical instructional roles. This includes publication in local, state and national journals in nursing or medicine.
- Ability to demonstrate good computer skills including computer documentation and order entry.
- Demonstrates ability to function independently and as a team member, working collaboratively with others.
- Demonstrated clinical leadership and experience with coordinating and managing complex, patients and providing safe hand offs to the next provider.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate clinical care ideas across multiple patient care services and to communicate effectively as a patient advocate.
- Demonstrated commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, sensitivity to diversity, and sharing knowledge with team members.
