Job Summary
The Manager of Windows and VMware Services is responsible for leading the design, support and governance of Michigan Medicine's Windows and VMware environments. This role ensures that Windows Operating systems and VMware virtualization environments are secure, cost-efficient, and aligned with organizational goals, supporting clinical, research, and administrative functions.
Reporting to the Director of Data Center Infrastructure, the Manager of Windows and VMware Services provides technical leadership for the implementation of operating system deployments, security architecture, hybrid cloud solutions, and on-premises virtualization. The Manager collaborates closely, and works in partnership with Architecture, Security, Networking, Application, UNIX, and Storage teams to ensure seamless on-premises and Cloud integration. This role is responsible for maintaining high availability, performance, and compliance with industry regulations such as HIPAA and NIST.
The Manager of the Windows Hosting Services Team within HITS Enterprise Infrastructure (EI) is a leadership role responsible for overseeing strategic direction, operational excellence, and continuous improvement of Windows and VMware Services at Michigan Medicine. This role manages a team of IT professionals, including senior systems architects, application programmers, and technical support staff, in managing a complex environment of over 3,500 Windows servers across physical and virtual (VMware) platforms, Azure Cloud. as well as critical infrastructure services such as Microsoft Exchange and Cisco hardware management within MM Datacenters
Responsibilities*
- Leadership & Team Management: Provide strategic and operational leadership to a multidisciplinary team. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability. Mentor staff and support professional development.
- Windows Server Environments: Direct the planning, deployment, design, and lifecycle management of Windows server environments on-premises and in the cloud for small, medium, and large-scale clinical, research, and business initiatives.
- VMware Virtualization Infrastructure: Lead the design, implementation, resource optimization, and lifecycle management of VMware environments to support diverse organizational needs.
- Cisco UCS Hardware: In collaboration with the UNIX manager, oversee all aspects of UCS server hardware management ensuring robust and high-performing systems in the primary and colocation datacenters.
- Exchange Mail Systems: Manage Exchange email, mail routing, hygiene, and security.
- Security & Compliance: Lead monthly security patching, and vulnerability management. Ensure the Windows hosting environment remains secure, compliant, and resilient.
- Customer Engagement: Act as a consultant to internal stakeholders, helping define and deliver tailored hosting solutions that meet evolving business and research needs.
- Technology Strategy: Lead the evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies, including hybrid cloud solutions and automation frameworks. Drive innovation in infrastructure design and service delivery.
- Operational Excellence: Oversee daily operations, including incident response, performance tuning, and capacity planning. Ensure high availability and reliability of all Windows-based services.
- Collaboration & Vendor Management: Work closely with internal teams and external vendors to support system deployments, upgrades, and service enhancements. Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and service level agreements (SLAs) to ensure high-quality support and cost-effective solutions.
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information T
echnology, or related field.
- 7 years of professional experience including at least 2 years of IT related experience.
- 3 years in a managerial/supervisory or team lead role overseeing 5 or more direct reports.
- Strong experience in Windows Server and VMware administration.
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's degree preferred.
- Demonstrated experience deploying and supporting on-premises and hybrid environments.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills for working with cross-functional teams.
- Leadership/management experience, with the ability to mentor and develop staff.
- Solid understanding of security best practices.
