Job Summary

PURPOSE

The House Manager serves as the on-site clinical and operational leader, ensuring safe, efficient, and coordinated patient care across all inpatient units. This role functions as the hospital?s central command for nursing operations, providing real-time decision-making, staffing oversight, and system-wide coordination, particularly during off-shifts when senior and unit leadership are not on-site.

CLINICAL & OPERATIONAL OVERSIGHT
  • Leads and coordinates hospital-wide patient care delivery across all inpatient units

  • Maintains situational awareness of census, acuity, and high-risk patients through ongoing, proactive rounding

  • Ensures continuity and safety of care at all times (24/7 operations)

  • Identifies real-time operational and patient care risks during rounding and initiates immediate intervention

STAFFING & RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
  • Adjusts staffing based on census, acuity, and skill mix across units

  • Deploys float pool and reallocates staff based on direct unit assessment and rounding insights

  • Partners with patient placement teams to support admission, transfer, and discharge throughput

  • Validates staffing effectiveness and emerging needs through physical presence on inpatient units

ADMINISTRATIVE AUTHORITY
  • Functions as the senior decision-maker during off-shift hours including weekends, and holidays

  • Interprets and enforces policies, regulatory standards, and escalation pathways

  • Communicates with Administrator-on-Call and escalates critical issues

  • Maintains visible leadership presence through rounding to ensure adherence and operational consistency

CLINICAL LEADERSHIP & STAFF SUPPORT
  • Serves as the highest-level clinical resource and mentor for nursing staff

  • Provides guidance in complex or deteriorating patient situations identified through rounding

  • Supports frontline teams through coaching, de-escalation, and decision support

FREQUENT UNIT ROUNDING & VISIBILITY
  • Conducts frequent, proactive rounding on inpatient units to maintain real-time situational awareness

  • Engages directly with frontline staff, charge nurses, and providers to assess unit conditions

  • Identifies emerging issues early and intervenes promptly to mitigate risk

  • Maintains a consistent, visible leadership presence to ensure accessibility and responsiveness

EMERGENCY & CRISIS MANAGEMENT
  • Partners with incident command during emergencies (codes, disasters, mass casualty events and other situations as needed)

  • Coordinates hospital response and resource mobilization

  • Ensures patient and staff safety during crises

  • Maintains leadership presence across affected units to assess conditions and guide response

COMMUNICATION & PROBLEM RESOLUTION
  • Serves as the central point of contact for inpatient units, departments, and patients/families

  • Resolves conflicts, complaints, and operational barriers in real time

  • Proactively identifies concerns through rounding and direct engagement

Required Qualifications*

  • Required Educational Requirement (Applicant must meet one of the following):
    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing OR Associates degree or Diploma in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan is necessary 
  • Three (3) years of nursing management or nursing supervisor/charge nurse experience within the last five (5) years 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to perform as a role model to nursing staff 
  • Nurse Leadership certification or completion within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

Hours/Week: 1.0 (40hrs/week)
Shifts/Hours: Nights (8 & 12hr shifts)
NOTE: This position includes weekends and holidays
Location: Central Staffing Resource Department in the University Hospital

Background Screening
