Job Summary

We are looking for a personable, self-motivated, and organized Clinical Research Assistant to help with participant recruitment and mailing activities for a large, multi-year clinical trial testing the efficacy of behavioral interventions on menthol smoking cessation among a diverse population of adults from six states. The Clinical Research Assistant will be expected to prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adhere to strict confidentiality policies. This is a great opportunity for candidates interested in public health and/or psychology, as well as those interested in gaining hands-on experience in clinical research and patient interaction before applying to graduate or medical school.

Responsibilities*

Position Specific Responsibilities will Include : 

  • Following remote recruitment procedures to approach, obtain consent from, and enroll eligible participants in the trial. These procedures include phone calls to pitch the study and following up with participants who need reminders to complete study activities via phone call, email and text message.

  • Mailing letters and packages to participants containing important study materials.

  • Completing detailed participant tracking forms accurately and efficiently using Enroll Now (formerly known as Ripple), a web-based software that facilitates participant recruitment and tracking.

  • With training and clinical supervision, conducting and documenting suicide risk assessments.

  • Other tasks as needed, such as helping leadership document procedures in study manuals, working on survey codebooks and measures tables, or literature review.

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Organized, self-motivated, empathic, personable, efficient, and has strong communication skills 
  • Able to work independently in a remote work environment for extended periods while maintaining effective communication with team leads, study coordinators and principal investigators 
  • Comfortable interacting with diverse populations and discussing sensitive topics with study participants 
  • Evening and weekend availability to meet participant needs

Desired Qualifications*

  • At least six months of previous experience in one or more of the following areas: research, clinical/hospital work or volunteer experience, customer service, and/or work experience requiring cold calling or managing a high volume of phone calls
  • Knowledge of the research process 
  • Previous experience with quantitative and/or qualitative data collection

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

We will have coverage 7 days a week between 10:00am-8:00pm. Our team members have the option to work four 10-hour shifts or five 8-hour shifts per week (40 hours per week). Shift times are usually between the hours of 10:00am-8:00pm, although exact times will vary depending on participant needs and the employees? availability. Team members are expected to share weekend coverage and work one or two weekend shifts each month. Team members may flex their schedules, when study needs allow, to accommodate participant needs and personal obligations, with prior supervisor approval.

Work Locations

This will be a hybrid position. Mailing, which is a key responsibility for this position, requires coming into one of Michigan Medicine's off campus locations in Ann Arbor, MI.  The Clinical Research Assistant will have the option to work remotely on days where being in office is not required.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

In addition to the screenings indicated above under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
