Job Summary

The Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering Department within the University of Michigan College of Engineering is seeking a Research Area Specialist to support advanced research in Enabling Data Proxies, Multilayer Networks, and Statistical Physics. In collaboration with Dr. David Singer and his research team, the ideal candidate will coordinate sponsored research projects and contribute to research activities involving data analysis, model development, and computational methods.

Responsibilities*

Research

  • Conducts research in the area of Enabling Data Proxies, Utilizing Multilayer Networks, and Statistical Physics. 
  • Designs instrumentation, theoretical models, equipment, or other vehicles for data gathering and analysis. 
  • Investigates, modifies, and applies new procedures, techniques, or applications of technology, integrating new findings in the field of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, specifically in the area of design.

Project Coordination and Management

  • In collaboration with Dr. David Singer and his research team, the ideal candidate will coordinate and manage projects as a researcher on one or more research projects. 
  • Coordinate day-to-day project planning and administrative activities associated with sponsored research projects, including timeline management, research coordination, and grant-related documentation. 
  • Ensures research activities remain aligned with available grant resources.

Data Collection and Analysis

  • Has oversight for the development of data collection instruments. 
  • Monitors the integrity of data collection and use of protocols and procedures; conducts data analysis.

Collaboration and Research Support

  • Participates in writing research proposals, reports for funding agencies, and articles for publication. Will present results of the study at professional meetings and other forums.
  • Collaborates with other researchers on long-range plans for a project/program, acting as an expert in a specialized area. 
  • Assists with integration into research activities for visiting scholars, researchers, and fellows.
  • Will collaborate on new curricular offerings and development using advanced AI agent modeling techniques.

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position, the applicant must have a Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering or a closely related field, along with the following qualifications:

  • Related research experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience with the U.S. Navy's Leading Edge Architecture for Prototyping Systems (LEAPS) data repository for ship design.
  • Experience with the U.S. Navy's Smart Ship Systems Design (S3D) software.
  • Knowledge of and experience applying principles of statistical physics.
  • Proficiency in C++, Python, and SQL programming languages.
  • Experience working with large datasets, including data wrangling, management, and analysis.
  • Experience with AI-assisted coding tools, large language models, or AI agent orchestration frameworks.
  • Publications in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering or related technical fields.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to assess, compare, and evaluate multiple courses of action and make sound decisions within scope of responsibility.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and competing deadlines with strong attention to detail, including the ability to independently prioritize and organize work effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and complete tasks using available resources with minimal supervision, while contributing proactively to research and technical objectives.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary research teams, with strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to contribute ideas to research, technical communications, and organizational initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in both in-person and remote environments.
