Job Summary

Reports to: Director of Data Science and Decision Support

What you will do: We are a small team of data lovers using data for the common good, helping the University of Michigan improve our world through data-informed philanthropy. We not only transform data into action, we do so mindfully, maintaining a holistic commitment to inclusion in all that we do.

As our new data scientist, you will gain insight from messy, real-world data by writing understandable and reusable code for statistical analysis and data mining, and by developing interactive dashboards and web applications. A typical work week will include deep collaboration with the Marketing and Communications team, a large amount of programming and algorithm development, a fair amount of data management, analysis, and visualization, as well as some outreach, usability testing, and brainstorming.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in fields such as Data Science, Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Business Intelligence, Analytics, Finance, Information Management or similar
  • 2+ years of experience with demonstrated competencies in information retrieval, computer science, data analysis, or similar fields
  • Ability to do serious data munging and data wrangling is essential. Demonstrated experience with SQL plus knowledge of another data preparation language. Must be able to use these tools to merge large datasets, locate and clean messy records, recode missing values, convert between data formats, and construct standardized datasets for wider use
  • Proven ability to turn data into action, emphasizing the ability to understand and utilize large datasets representing complex phenomena and to present findings in a clear and cohesive manner. Must demonstrate ability to present information in formal and informal settings and translate complex data findings and ideas into clear, non-technical summaries that a wide variety of stakeholders can understand
  • The ability to synthesize and translate data into meaningful stories
  • Curiosity, and teamwork skills to collaborate with technical and non-technical peers and to solve challenging questions head-on
  • Exposure to developing interactive, reusable and self-service online analytics tools
  • Familiarity with, or interest in learning, various machine learning and data mining concepts and techniques
  • Familiarity and comfort with the nuances of the higher education environment
  • Exposure to cloud-based analytics tools

This is a hybrid position. Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
