You will report to the HR Supervisor in the Student Life Human Resources unit. Our unit supports the full employment life cycle for approximately 1,500 employees and approximately 3,000 temporary employees across the Division, including both professional and bargained-for staff, and student and non-student temporary employees.
This position is hybrid, allowing for remote work and participation in virtual meetings using video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, as well as mobile devices. You will also commute across campus 2-3 days per week for in-person meetings with different units within the division in the Ann Arbor area.
Responsibilities*
As a Senior HR Business Partner, you will be a key partner to our leaders, ensuring HR strategies align with organizational goals. You will guide staffing strategies, employee relations, investigations, student employment, and organizational development, while ensuring compliance with employment laws, policies, and labor agreements. You will work closely with leadership to address complex people issues, support collective bargaining and union-related matters, lead organizational change efforts, and cultivate a collaborative, result-focused culture. You will leverage data-driven insights to inform decisions, coach managers, and implement HR programs that enhance employee engagement, retention, and overall effectiveness.
Main Responsibilities and Expectations:
- You will provide guidance on day-to-day HR matters, interpret policies, and develop solutions that address both immediate and long-term organizational needs. You will partner with leaders to assess workforce needs, manage hiring and onboarding for all employee types, and support performance management, coaching, and employee development.
- Your role also includes managing compensation and classification processes, maintaining accurate HR records, analyzing HR metrics, and recommending process improvements to enhance engagement, retention, and operational effectiveness.
- You will assist unionized units in navigating collective bargaining agreements and support management in grievance matters. You will also support workplace investigations, help address employee relations matters, and promote consistent application of policies and practices in alignment with applicable laws and guidelines.
- You will manage HR processes and employee records, identify and resolve workflow bottlenecks, and use workforce data and metrics to support staffing analysis, guide decision-making, and drive continuous improvements that enhance operational efficiency and the overall employee experience.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience/HR certification.
- Five or more years of professional experience in human resources, including at least two years in a senior-level role partnering with managers and leaders on HR Business Partner-related work such as organizational planning, workforce development, performance management, and employee and labor relations.
- Demonstrated experience conducting workplace investigations and managing complex employee relations issues.
- Strong knowledge of HR policies, compensation, and classification practices, staffing analysis, employment laws, and compliance requirements.
- Proficiency in the use of HR systems, metrics, and reporting tools to support data-driven decision-making.
- Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
