Job Summary

The University of Michigan's Department of Psychiatry's Addiction Center, a leading-edge treatment, education and research center, is recruiting for a tenure track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. The Center is at the forefront of improving prevention, treatment, and sustained recovery for substance use disorders. To help address the complex issues surrounding addiction, U-M built one of the country's most comprehensive programs in addictions. Established in 1988, our interdisciplinary team of national and international experts is collaborating with colleagues across the country and across our campus - including in the basic sciences and computer engineering - to innovate, increase knowledge, and train the next generation of leaders in the field. Faculty in the Center have made key contributions to brain imaging; prevention and early diagnosis; and treatment, including the development of targeted healthcare interventions. 

The Addiction Center is housed in the Department of Psychiatry and aims to identify and provide effective state-of-the-art prevention interventions and treatments for those at risk of developing, or for those who are suffering from, substance use problems. To reduce risks for people across the lifespan and to learn how to avoid future wide-scale problems, we are creating new knowledge through research on the biological and behavioral underpinnings of addiction as well as the social and contextual factors that contribute to their development, progression, and recovery. At U-M, we are pursuing game-changing discoveries and approaches to addiction. Our team includes over 20 faculty and is currently conducting more than two dozen studies sponsored by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Department of Defense, the CDC, PCORI and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Areas of focus include understanding how genetics, race/ethnicity, economic status, stress, sleep, and chronic pain play a role in addiction. 

The applicant for this position should be a clinical psychologist and have a solid research background and training in neuroimaging and behavioral psychology. Individuals are sought with specific strengths in substance abuse research to join a flourishing addiction research program. Successful independent research funding is strongly preferred. The position is primarily focused on research but also will include clinical and teaching responsibilities in the Department of Psychiatry or other units of U-M. The candidate will also be able to work with other relevant research programs in the Department and the U-M.

We seek a candidate with expertise in areas such as functional magnetic resonance imagining, factors associated with addiction including inhibitory control and reward processing, neuroimaging statistics, and psychometric measurement of personality, behavior, and psychopathology. The applicant should contribute to translational clinical science by expanding our understanding of the impact of key social determinants of health on neural mechanisms of risk for developing substance use problems and suggesting strategies for targeted interventions aimed at reducing the negative sequelae of childhood trauma.  This position will report through the Director of the Substance Use Program and U-M Addiction Center, Dr. Frederic Blow.

Educational and Scientific Activities

The preferred candidate, in addition to a central research role, will also be expected to be involved in the training activities within the Addiction Center, including mentoring of fellows in our NIAAA T32 postdoctoral research training program. The precise distribution of effort between research and educational activities is open to negotiation and impacted by research funding.  

Required Qualifications*

Applicants must hold a PhD and have completed post-doctoral training. We are seeking someone with a demonstrated history of research success as evidenced by multiple publications in the areas of fMRI, EEG, or cognitive neuroscience and who can qualify for an appointment at the University of Michigan at an Assistant Professor level. Success in research funding is a plus, as is a central component of this position.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

In addition to the screenings indicated above under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
