Job Summary
The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Michigan is expanding a nationally and internationally funded research program at the cutting edge of cardiovascular medicine. Led by Drs. Venkatesh Murthy - whose work has appeared in leading journals including NEJM AI, JAMA, and Circulation - the program fuses artificial intelligence, advanced cardiac imaging, multiomics (proteomics, metabolomics, and genomics), and cardiometabolic disease biology to develop precision diagnostics and identify novel therapeutic approaches, with a particular focus on coronary microvascular disease and other cardiovascular conditions that disproportionately affect women and remain poorly served by existing diagnostic tools. This is a rare opportunity to join a high-impact, well-funded program doing science that matters.
This position provides research data coordination and computational pipeline support for the program, working closely with the senior data scientists and principal investigators. This is a support and coordination role rather than a primary data science position: the incumbent assists senior scientists with data infrastructure, quality control, and pipeline maintenance, freeing them to focus on the analytical and grant-development activities where they are most needed. This is a 1-year term-limited appointment with possibility of renewal based on funding and performance.
Responsibilities*
Support data governance, pipeline maintenance, and code documentation across active research datasets, including data extracted from clinical sources such as U-M DataDirect
Perform data cleaning, transformation, and quality control using Python; maintain and update project databases and data dictionaries
Coordinate data transfers, linkages, and formatting across platforms and study sites; support REDCap database management and data entry quality monitoring
Prepare and present written and code-based (Python) reports of work progress, data quality metrics, and analytic results
Document analytic workflows to ensure reproducibility
Support administrative research tasks to enable investigators to focus on grant-funded scientific activities
Collaborate with research coordinators to identify and resolve data discrepancies

Required Qualifications*
- Bachelors degree in engineering, computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted, including relevant undergraduate and graduate student work experience.
- 1-3 years of experience in a related field.
- Proficiency in Python for data analysis, including data cleaning, transformation, and pipeline support
- Experience working with structured datasets: quality control, documentation, and reproducible workflows
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks
- Supervisory and budget administration experience.
- Ability to prepare and present written and code-based (Python) reports of work progress, methods, and results
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work effectively with data scientists, faculty investigators, and administrative staff
Desired Qualifications*
Experience with SQL or relational database systems (PostgreSQL preferred)
Familiarity with version control (Git) and collaborative code management practices
Familiarity with U-M DataDirect or similar clinical data query platforms (i2b2, OMOP, or equivalent)
Familiarity with data governance practices, including metadata documentation and data dictionaries
Experience with REDCap or similar clinical research data management platforms
Exposure to biomedical, clinical, or health-related datasets
Interest in cardiovascular medicine, AI in medicine, or translational research

Modes of Work

At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
