Job Summary
Why Join the Department of Social Work?
This MSW role provides social work services to adults in two clinics, providing care for patients with Parkinsons and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) diagnoses. As both are progressive neurodegenerative diseases, these patient populations suffer from the effects on their nervous systems and voluntary muscle movement. Patients also experience a high acuity of anxiety, depression, adjustment and coping concerns, and grief and loss. The social worker will conduct psychosocial assessments, treatment, and care management services to patients and their families who have been referred to social work services by clinic providers. This position will have significant portion of their time (75%) dedicated to providing psychotherapy to patients in both clinics. Both face-to-face and virtual work will be utilized in this position. This position is partially supported with philanthropic funds.

Responsibilities*
Evaluation of psychosocial needs and provision of billable social work interventions with a high degree of autonomy.
Psychotherapeutic intervention, and psychoeducation for patients and caregivers.
Facilitating patient and family participation in appropriate health care decision making.
Crisis intervention.
Patient and/or family support and counseling.
Mental health assessment and provision of evidence-based psychotherapy (e.g. CBT, ACT, DBT).
Support group facilitation.
Liaison and referral to community agencies.
Participation in team meetings, educational activities, and patient advisory board.
Referral monitoring and management.
Required Qualifications*
A Master's degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.
Current full clinical license to practice social work in the State of Michigan. A fully licensed LMSW is required for billing purposes.
Must be able to bill Medicare for services.
Experience providing evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions.
Significant clinical practice experience in medical social work.
Skilled in developing rapport and effectively communicating with a diverse patient population.
Efficient, accurate assessment of patient needs and effective case dispositions.
Effective organizational skills, flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks in a dynamic medical clinic.
Independent, sound decision-making is necessary for success in this position.
Effective collaboration with a large multi-disciplinary team.
Proficiency in keeping accurate and timely clinical records by computer.
Desired Qualifications*
- Significant experience with medical social work in the contexts of degenerative neurological diseases.
Modes of Work
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
Work Schedule
Current department hours are 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, Monday ? Friday.
This position requires being onsite at Taubman Center for ALS clinic on Wed. (8:00 a.m. ? 5:00 p.m.) Therapy (virtual) hours may vary and could include early evenings if needed to accommodate patient schedules.

Underfill Statement
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Advancement through the career ladder at the Expert or Clinical Scholar Level is required for placement in the MSW Senior Classification
Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
