Who We Are

Prevention, Education, Assistance & Resources (PEAR), a unit within the Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX Office (ECRT), provides presentations, workshops, professional development, and resources focused on the prevention of sexual and gender-based misconduct for employees across U-M's Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn campuses, and Michigan Medicine. 

PEAR also partners with faculty and staff leaders to help units in holistically responding to sexual and gender-based misconduct within their communities. In addition to supporting the creation of unit level sexual and gender-based harassment and misconduct prevention efforts, PEAR works closely with campus partners to provide comprehensive and evidence-based prevention programs for U-M.

Job Summary

The PEAR Specialist Intermediate will be the main point of contact for Michigan Medicine and a portfolio of schools, colleges, departments, and units with a focus in health sciences.  The specialist may be assigned other areas to support, as needed.  The specialist will develop and deliver comprehensive, trauma-informed education, training, and consultation to promote a culture free from sexual and gender-based misconduct. This position will also provide holistic support to leaders following an incident or concerns of sexual misconduct within their community; this includes consultations, interventions, and tailored workshops. 

The position requires strong facilitation and relationship-building skills, an understanding of sexual and gender-based misconduct prevention, and the ability to navigate sensitive and complex topics with care, professionalism, and sound judgment. 

Responsibilities*

Essential:

Training and Consultations ? 70% 

The specialist will provide sexual and gender-based misconduct prevention training, consultation, and tailored interventions for Michigan Medicine and designated schools, colleges, departments, and units.

Policy and Prevention Trainings: Work with Title IX Coordinators and PEAR/ECRT colleagues to prepare and offer trainings on prevention, university policy, and employee reporting obligations. 

  • Provide feedback on the creation of research-based, effective, and engaging training on preventing sexual and gender-based misconduct. This includes a public health informed approach, including primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies. With increasing responsibility, the staff member can begin to create trainings independently.
  • Provide training and presentations on the U-M Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct (SGBM) Policy and Procedures, including the responsibilities of Individuals with Reporting Obligations under the U-M SGBM Policy and helpful strategies to support those who may disclose to an employee with reporting obligations. 
  • Provide training and presentations on prevention topics such as bystander intervention, power dynamics, responding compassionately to disclosures, creating respectful workplace cultures, and other emerging prevention needs. 
  • Partner with PEAR/ECRT colleagues to ensure educational content is consistent with University policies, as well as federal, state, and local legal requirements pertaining to sexual and relationship violence, including Title IX and Clery Act. 
  • Amplify existing prevention programs designed to cater to diverse communities and identities using the ARC3 2024 climate survey data and ECRT campus climates.

Consultations, Tailored Workshops, and Circles: 

  • Provide holistic support in the form of consultation, training, and interventions designed to assist communities and groups who are responding to incidents of sexual harm in their communities. 
  • Support the development of tailored workshops and prevention strategies in response to the needs of individual departments, units, and communities.
  • Provide ongoing support, training, and individual consultation with staff and faculty leaders across the University to address questions related to creating safe and supportive spaces, free from sexual misconduct. 
  • Collaborate with campus partners to co-facilitate restorative justice circles when appropriate.
  • Connect faculty, staff, and leaders with appropriate university resources and partners based on identified needs. 

PEAR Resource Development and Assessment - 20%

Work collaboratively and creatively with the PEAR team to strengthen the office?s infrastructure and expand the PEAR programs, resources, and initiatives. 

  • Continue developing a campus-wide public health approach to prevention, co-creating programs and interventions for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. 
  • Assist with the creation of a liaison program where designated faculty and staff from school/college/departmental level serve as prevention liaisons for their units.
  • Assist with the development of resources for units, managers, and others who seek to create unit-specific prevention planning. 
  • Assist with content and updates to online courses. 
  • Assist with PEAR assessment and evaluation efforts. 
  • Assist with planning for special events, sponsored or co-sponsored by PEAR, such as the biennial U-M Conference on Ending Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Violence.

Collaboration and Additional Duties - 10%

  • Develop and sustain collaborations with Michigan Medicine departments and other units to support local prevention efforts and identify emerging needs. 
  • Foster collaboration with campus partners on prevention related work such as Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC), Ethics, Integrity, and Compliance Office (EICO), Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT), Organizational Learning (OL), Staff Human Resources (HR), Academic HR, Wolverine Wellness, Department of Public Safety (DPSS), the Coordinated Community Response Team (CCRT), and the Workplace Violence Prevention Working Group.
  • Develop and maintain effective working partnerships with key community agencies including but not limited to: Safe House Center, City of Ann Arbor including Ann Arbor Police Department, City Council, and Prosecutor?s office.
  • Collaborate with faculty colleagues researching issues related to ending sexual and gender-based violence, including the Institute on Research on Women and Gender Ending Gender Based Violence program to align campus efforts with research findings. 
  • Represent PEAR on campus committees and task forces. 
  • Attend weekly PEAR staff meetings and regular ECRT meetings. 
  • Attend regular individual meetings with direct supervisor. 
  • Assist with annual report and other reports as requested. 

RELATED DUTIES

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree required; Areas of study preferred in fields of social work, women's and gender studies, public health, higher education, organizational leadership, psychology or related fields. 
  • Minimum of four years of professional experience. 
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing effective training and workshops for adult learners. 
  • Specialized knowledge in creating and providing prevention education and programs related to sexual and gender-based misconduct. 
  • Specialized knowledge in campus sexual and gender-based misconduct policies (e.g. Title IX, VAWA, Clery Act). 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively about complex and sensitive topics with a wide range of audiences.
  • Strong written, verbal, facilitation, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships and work effectively across teams, disciplines, and organizational structures.
  • Ability to approach sensitive information and situations with professionalism, discretion, sound judgment, and a trauma-informed approach.

Skills You Have

  • Experience and demonstrated ability to manage programs and resource development. 
  • Knowledge of assessment, evaluation, and research methodologies, especially related to learning outcomes, learning environments, campus climate assessment, and program evaluation. 
  • Experience reading and translating research, policy, or complex subject matter into accessible and engaging educational content. 
  • Experience with and training in Restorative Practices. 
  • Effective management, administrative, conflict resolution, and team-building skills. 
  • Experience working with diverse and marginalized communities. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
