Job Summary

The Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention (IFIP) is a transdisciplinary institute that works to engage the breadth of expertise across the University of Michigan, with input from nonacademic stakeholders, to generate knowledge and advance solutions that will decrease firearm injury in the United States. The Institute also serves as a national hub for research that will drive new solutions to this public health crisis and will train the next generation of leaders in the field. The Institute is supported by an organizational structure that provides internal oversight and external guidance and focuses activities across six cores: 1) research, 2) education and training, 3) community engagement, 4) policy, 5) implementation, and 6) data and methods; and across six pillars: firearm-related suicide, firearm-related intimate partner violence, community violence, unintentional shootings, police shootings, and mass/school violence.

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented project coordinator to work closely with the team at the Institute to develop, design, and conduct Institute projects and initiatives. The staff will work with the Coordinating Center team to support community-based firearm violence research. The Community Firearm Violence Prevention (CFVP) Network is a National Institutes for Health (NIH) supported community-academic research collaboration working to prevent firearm violence across the United States through developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative community-based interventions. The Coordinating Center (housed in IFIP) coordinates five research projects across the country, a steering committee, a stakeholder committee, and the NIH, in a cohesive network to evaluate the efficacy of community-based firearm violence interventions across various settings and populations. 

Key initial activities include developing center activities, providing centralized administrative, operational, and logistical support to network activities, support cross-project communication and coordination, provide technical assistance to network projects regarding research design and statistical methods, support data infrastructure management to facilitate cross-site data collection, management, harmonization, linkage, and sharing/archiving, project management and collaboration across the Coordinating Center's cores.

The successful candidate will work under the guidance of the Coordinating Center Managing Director. This person is expected to understand and support the conduct of research within all federal, state and local regulatory requirements.

The job functions of this role will include, but are not limited to:

  • Support the harmonization of data across multiple research projects for analysis, reporting and dissemination.
  • Collaborate with project team members, and Principal Investigators, on data collection and methods for collecting, organizing, and reporting data.
  • Gather and clean data from project sites and ensure adequate data collection and verification.
  • Coordinate Data and Methods Core and other Workgroup meetings, including working with the administrative coordinator to schedule meetings, coordinating meeting agendas, preparing meeting materials, taking notes, maintaining up-to-date documentation and files. 
  • Track and ensure timely data deposits from the project teams to the centralized data repository.
  • Oversee the timely completion of any planned integrated data analyses (with the faculty, data team).
  • Manage and track any manuscripts planned and/or completed on cross network data to ensure no overlap and timely completion.
  • Work with ICPSR to establish the data series page, content, and to ensure curation and archiving of relevant project data.
  • Assist with writing Standard Operating Procedures for data analysis and management.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations that are clear, concise, and technically accurate.
  • Perform data analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Communicate on a consistent basis with team members, supervisors, colleagues, providing input on project goals, objectives, and operations.
  • Create training materials and general documentation as requested.
  • Tracking and reporting on activities, and preparing reports.
  • Provide cross-center project coordination and support of other Cores and IFIP activities and projects.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, Master preferred. (associate level); Master's degree in related field (intermediate level).

  • 1-3 years (associate level) or 4-5 years (intermediate level) of related experience and/or research project coordination with a demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects to deadline.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google programs (e.g., Gmail, calendar, Drive); and Zoom.

  • Experience in REDCap, Qualtrics, and Dedoose.

  • Experience with research data management and data cleaning.

  • Experience with research data collection.

  • Experience querying, managing and testing data in applications that store data in relational databases.

  • Experience with survey data collection applications and working directly with the associated data/paradata.

  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects to deadline.

  • Effective organization and management of multiple priorities in a complex environment.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.

  • Careful attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and as a successful team member.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with academic research enterprises including externally sponsored research, research administration, and funding sources.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of firearm injury prevention is preferred, but not necessary.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

This position is for a hybrid work schedule of both in-person and remote work with 2 days of on campus work (Ann Arbor campus) expected each week.

Underfill Statement

This position may be filled at the level of Research Area Specialist Intermediate (102907) or Research Area Specialist Associate (102905) depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant.
