Job Summary
Plans, directs, organizes, and supervises the operational activities of the Anesthesia Technical Services section across C.S. Mott Children's Hospital & Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital (C&W), Labor & Delivery (L&D), and offsite Non-Operating Room Anesthesia (NORA) locations.
Provides transformative leadership for a diverse workforce of Allied Health employees supporting anesthesiology practice. In addition to direct staff supervision, this role serves as the departmental authority for anesthesia equipment, high-volume supply management, and Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) operations. Responsible for capital budget planning, physician/finance coordination, vendor negotiations, equipment lifecycle tracking, and maintaining strict regulatory compliance, quality control, and staff clinical competencies across all assigned practice sites.
Responsibilities*
1. Regulatory Compliance, POCT & Quality Assurance
- Direct and oversee compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and institutional bodies (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, CAP, CLIA, state health authorities).
- Manage the department's Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) program, ensuring proper operation, maintenance, and quality control (QC) testing of all clinical diagnostic equipment used by anesthesia staff.
- Establish, monitor, and document mandatory staff competency programs, initial training, and annual re-evaluations for equipment operation, POCT procedures, and clinical workflows.
- Develop and enforce robust Quality Assurance (QA) protocols, regular safety audits, and routine/preventative quality checks across all technical equipment and supply setups.
2. Capital Budgeting, Financial Coordination & Vendor Management
- Direct and manage the capital budget for specialized anesthesia equipment across all assigned clinical locations.
- Coordinate directly with medical leadership/physicians and Finance to forecast current and future technology needs, perform cost analyses, and draft/submit capital proposals for equipment both above and below capital expenditure thresholds.
- Manage relationships with external vendors, including negotiating supply pricing, organizing equipment trials and product demonstrations, and coordinating departmental presentations for new technologies.
- Oversee equipment warranty management, service contracts, and maintenance agreements in close collaboration with Biomedical Engineering.
3. Supply Chain & High-Volume Inventory Control
- Oversee the acquisition, monitoring, and inventory control for a high volume of single-use medical supplies and specialized anesthesia equipment.
- Track, audit, and manage equipment inventory using enterprise online tracking software to ensure immediate availability and loss prevention across pediatric/women's ORs and offsite NORA suites.
- Perform operational analyses on usage trends, commodity consumption, and unit spend to maintain cost-effective inventory levels without compromising clinical readiness.
4. Strategic & Multi-Site Operational Leadership
- Direct daily operational activities, work hours, staff assignments, and workflow coverage for Anesthesia Technicians across Mott C&W, L&D, and offsite NORA locations.
- Develop, revise, and enforce unit objectives, standardized setup workflows, cleaning/sanitization protocols, and operator maintenance policies for all anesthesia equipment.
- Represent the section on strategic committees, interdisciplinary safety groups, infection control panels, and quality improvement initiatives.
5. People Management & Team Leadership
- Supervise a team of full-time equivalent (FTE) permanent employees.
- Manage full employment lifecycle activities: interviewing, hiring, onboarding, coaching, appraising performance, managing grievances, disciplining, and making promotional/termination decisions.
- Set and adjust work schedules to optimize coverage across diverse clinical sites and high-priority coverage areas (such as L&D).
- Promote team cohesion, lead by example, resolve workplace conflict, and manage staff recognition and retention programs.
Required Qualifications*
- Education: Bachelors degree in Allied Health, Health Administration, Business Administration, Healthcare Operations, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of progressive leadership/supervisory experience in a clinical or health system environment.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Demonstrated experience managing permanent staff, work schedules, onboarding, and performance appraisals.
- Proven knowledge of healthcare regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, CAP).
- Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills with a track record of effective conflict resolution and building cohesive teams.
- Ability to resolve operational issues independently and manage multiple administrative/clinical priorities concurrently.

- Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare Management or related advanced degree.
- Direct experience leading multi-site Joint Commission readiness or healthcare accreditation preparation groups.
- Background in clinical technical operations, diagnostic point-of-care testing (POCT / ABG execution), or leadership within a major academic medical center.
- Demonstrated experience managing vendor relations, purchase verification, and facility/equipment preventive maintenance tracking.

This position meets the full criteria for exempt status under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) (salary level, salary basis, and duties tests) and oversees permanent, ongoing operational, financial, and regulatory compliance functions.

- Moving anesthesia machines and equipment carts across multiple hospital floors and campus locations (including Mott C&W 3rd Floor, L&D, and offsite NORA facilities).
- Lifting up to 15 pounds independently.
- Frequent reaching above head to retrieve light supplies; frequent bending, stooping, twisting, and turning.
