Job Summary
The Department of Fine and Performing Arts and the program of Theatre and Dance at the University of Michigan-Flint seeks a collaborative colleague to be the Music Director and also be the rehearsal and performance accompanist for all rehearsals (including technical rehearsals) and performances of the annual main stage musical, The Lightning Thief. This role will also be responsible for arranging and conducting musicians to play in the pit orchestra for the performances.
This is a temporary position with an expected duration for the production from Jan 2027- April 27, 2027.
Responsibilities*
Music Director Responsibilities
- Teach all musical elements of the music to the cast, and oversee the artistic musical nuances of the
production; - Provide cast members supplemental vocal coaching as needed.
- Auditioning, assembling, rehearsing and conducting an appropriate orchestra for performances.
Accompanist Responsibilities
- Serve as pianist for auditions, all rehearsals and performances.
Required Qualifications*
- Professional experience as a piano accompanist and musical director
- Previous collaborative experience and Interpersonal skills within the realm of musical theatre
- Strong sight-reading skills
- Effective teaching skills
Desired Qualifications*
- Experience transposing and arranging is preferred.
- A strong working knowledge of the voice and of contemporary and traditional musical theatre repertoire
