Job Summary

  • Performs diagnostic radiographic examinations using ionizing radiation to produce high-quality images of designated anatomical areas for patients of all ages, in accordance with established policies, procedures, and professional standards. Obtains and reviews patient history, explains procedures, addresses patient concerns, and ensures patient comfort and safety throughout the imaging process.
  • Provides exceptional patient care by adhering to Radiology Gold Service Excellence standards, promoting a positive patient experience and successful completion of examinations. Exercises professional judgment and independent decision-making while performing duties in compliance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Code of Ethics and professional practice standards.
  • Collaborates effectively as a member of the healthcare team to support departmental goals, ensure operational excellence, and uphold internal and external customer service expectations. Demonstrates stewardship of resources and contributes to a culture of quality, safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
     

Responsibilities*

  • Perform high-quality diagnostic radiographic and fluoroscopic imaging procedures while adhering to radiation safety standards to minimize exposure for patients, staff, and self.
  • Position and prepare patients for orthopedic, musculoskeletal (MSK), Operating Room (OR), and Medical Procedure Unit (MPU) procedures, utilizing appropriate immobilization techniques, radiation protection devices, and age-specific care practices.
  • Evaluate images for technical quality, anatomical accuracy, patient identification, and correct marker placement to ensure diagnostic value.
  • Safely operate and maneuver C-arms, portable radiographic equipment, and related imaging technologies in surgical and procedural settings.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, physicians, nurses, anesthesia providers, and multidisciplinary care teams to support high-quality patient care and procedural efficiency.
  • Adhere to Universal Precautions, infection prevention standards, sterile technique requirements, and all University of Michigan Health policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition, including respiratory distress, cardiac events, seizures, altered consciousness, and other emergent situations.
  • Maintain aseptic technique throughout procedures to promote patient safety and minimize infection risks.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families by obtaining relevant clinical information, providing procedural education, reducing anxiety, and ensuring a positive patient experience.
  • Demonstrate exceptional customer service through professional interactions, application of Guest Relations principles, and strict maintenance of patient confidentiality.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment through professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and effective communication.
  • Adapt to changing clinical and operational needs, including emergency situations, workflow modifications, new technologies, protocol development, and scheduling adjustments.
  • Perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment while maintaining quality, safety, and patient-centered care standards.
  • Maintain current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification and meet all continuing education requirements.
  • Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Support outpatient and procedural operations through inventory management, supply stocking, equipment monitoring, and other departmental activities.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and accreditation initiatives to support departmental and organizational goals.
  • Assist in the orientation, training, mentoring, and competency development of students, new employees, and existing staff.
     

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from a school of radiologic technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology required or registry eligible with the first exam attempt must be within 6 months from hire/transfer. 3 attempts must be completed within 18 months from hire/transfer. 
  • This classification requires Primary Source Verification.  


 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience utilizing Communication Systems (PACS), Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, and computerized documentation workflows, with strong data entry and computer proficiency.
  • Experience operating GE OEC C-arm systems, digital imaging technology, and performing imaging procedures associated with gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) services.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification preferred.
  • Previous experience in orthopedic, musculoskeletal (MSK), Operating Room (OR), and procedural imaging environments is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical setting while maintaining high standards of patient care, safety, and image quality.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills with the ability to effectively interact with patients, families, physicians, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, sound clinical judgment, problem-solving ability, professionalism, and adaptability in a dynamic healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge of age-specific patient care principles, including appropriate communication techniques, patient positioning, radiation exposure considerations, and radiation safety practices across all patient populations.
  • Ability to safely assist, transfer, lift, push, and pull patients and equipment in accordance with established safety guidelines.
  • Physical capability to maneuver radiologic equipment, including portable imaging units, C-arms, and positioning devices required for diagnostic and procedural imaging.
  • Demonstrated manual dexterity and fine motor skills necessary to operate imaging equipment, perform patient positioning, and complete required documentation accurately.
  • Proven reliability, dependability, and commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care, safety, and quality.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume clinical environment while maintaining accuracy, efficiency, and patient-centered care

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

  • Part-time position scheduled for 20 hours per week.
  • Flexible scheduling options with varying workdays and start times to meet departmental and operational needs.
  • Rotation includes one half-day Saturday shift every eighth weekend. 8:30am-12:30pm.
  • Schedule may be adjusted based on patient volumes, departmental priorities, and staffing needs.
  • Training Schedule: Mainly day shift training but no weekends until training is completed.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening
