Job Summary
This full-time pharmacist position will serve as the Lead Pharmacist and Pharmacist-in-Charge for the opening of the new Troy Center for Specialty Care (TCSC) Community Pharmacy. This position will work in collaboration with a team of dedicated pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, providers, nurses, and other interdisciplinary partners to provide comprehensive care to patients of the Troy Center for Specialty Care. This position will also play a critical leadership role within the TCSC Pharmacy Team, and will also be a member of the UM Community Pharmacies Leadership Team.
The Troy Medical Campus will be University of Michigan Health's first clinical presence in the Oakland County market. We are building a state-of-the-art specialty care campus in the heart of Troy where a deeply human commitment to personalized care will come together with world-class expertise, cutting-edge therapies, and a legacy of more than 175 years of transformative research to help patients and families in Oakland County and beyond find their Michigan Answers. The campus will feature two outpatient facilities with over a dozen specialty programs, including Cancer services, Musculoskeletal/Sports Medicine, and Reproductive Medicine, as well as a surgery/procedure center, comprehensive imaging services, laboratory, pharmacy, and therapy services. The campus is conveniently located near I-75, surrounded by popular shopping and dining, and features free parking, on-site cafe, with facilities committed to sustainable, environmentally responsible practices.
Pharmacy services planned for the building include a community pharmacy, OR and infusion pharmacy, satellite pharmacy, and ambulatory clinic-based pharmacy services. This position will play a pivotal role in the planning and opening of the new community pharmacy, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Furthermore, this position will have the exciting opportunity to cross-train to provide support to the OR and infusion pharmacy.

Responsibilities*
Pharmacist in Charge responsibilities (PIC):
This position will assume the Pharmacist-in-Charge role overseeing the handling and security of medications for the Troy Center for Specialty Care building during the planning and opening stages. The duties of the PIC include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervision of all activities of pharmacy employees as they relate to the practice of pharmacy including the purchasing, storage, compounding, repackaging, dispensing, and distribution of drugs and devices to ensure that those activities are performed in compliance with this part and the rules promulgated under this part. This includes the oversight of sterile compounding and cleanroom operations, to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
Enforcement and oversight of policies and procedures applicable to the employees of the pharmacy for the procurement, storage, compounding, and dispensing of drugs and the communication of information to the patient in relation to drug therapy.
Establishment and supervision of the method and manner for storage and safekeeping of pharmaceuticals, including maintenance of security provisions to be used when the pharmacy is closed.
Establishment and supervision of the record-keeping system for the purchase, sale, delivery, possession, storage, and safekeeping of drugs and devices.
Establishment of policies and procedures for individuals who are delegated responsibilities for any of the tasks described in this subsection by the PIC.
Clinical Pharmacist Generalist job duties include:
Community Pharmacy Services:
Review, clarify, and process medication orders in a timely manner while assuring appropriateness of therapy.
Perform medication reconciliation on each set of prescription orders to facilitate a smooth transition of care to the outpatient community setting.
Provide patient counseling, Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services, and administer immunizations.
Provide functional supervision of technical staff working in their area, including completion of job assignments and assuring adherence to institutional policies and procedures.
Serve as preceptors for University of Michigan Pharm.D. students on a variety of rotations, including medication reconciliation, direct patient care, Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) during the second- and third years, and institutional unit-based hospital practice, Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) during the fourth year. In addition, pharmacists will assist with precepting pharmacy residents, including the PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Resident and the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residents.
Collaborate with nursing, social work, providers, pharmacists, and others to optimize patient care.
Assist with problem-solving and process improvements within the pharmacy.
Other duties and projects assigned by the manager to facilitate safe and efficient patient care.
Infusion and OR Pharmacy Services:
- Review, clarify, and process medication orders in a timely manner while assuring appropriateness of therapy.
- Dispensing and checking of sterile product preparations.
- Hosting in-services for nursing education.
- Dispense investigational study medications and clinical order verifications.
- Ensuring optimal effectiveness and safety of medications used throughout the institution.
- Serve as preceptors for University of Michigan Pharm.D. students on a variety of rotations.
- Providing accurate and timely drug information
- Collaborating with interdisciplinary health care team members

Teaching:

Quality Improvement:
Pharmacists provide input and suggestions for process improvements to improve the care that is provided to our patients. Activities include researching opportunities and initiating action plans with follow through until successful implementation of the improvement.

Pharmacists provide functional supervision of technical staff working in their area including completion of job assignments and assuring adherence to institutional policies and procedures.
Responsibilities*
This part-time 20 hours per week position is dedicated to 100% patient care as a clinical pharmacist, generalist within the specialty pharmacy program. This position reports directly to the Pharmacy Manager - Specialty Clinical Services. This position will work a hybrid work schedule, with a mix of remote work with occasional onsite work at our Joy Road Services Center in Dexter, MI and potential for work onsite in our Specialty clinics around the Ann Arbor, MI area pending space and future planning. Remote work must be done inside the state of Michigan.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
The pharmacist will support patient care responsibilities for University of Michigan Health specialty pharmacy patients. This includes developing individualized patient care plans and performing therapy baseline and periodic reassessment for every enrolled patient prior to medication dispensation. Both initial and reassessment involves adherence monitoring, medication reconciliation, drug interaction assessment, side effect management, comprehensive medication reviews (CMR), and patient counseling and education. The clinical pharmacist, generalist also supports clinic providers in selecting appropriate specialty medication(s), responding to patient-specific drug information requests, and writing insurance coverage appeal letters for specialty medications.
Core functions include:
Patient care duties include prescription verification, clinical care for specialty patients including, but not limited to, baseline and follow-up CMR and adherence checks, supporting clinical services in conjunction with UMHS providers and clinics, and close coordination with UM Health clinics providing care to specialty patients.
Pharmacist responsibilities are focused to ensure optimal effectiveness and safety of medications dispensed and to consistently provide accurate, clear, and timely drug information to members of healthcare teams and patients.
The incumbent will provide functional supervision of technical staff working in their area including completion of job assignments and assuring adherence to institutional policies and procedures. Additionally, the incumbent will contribute to accreditation maintenance and renewal along with associated quality improvement and assurance initiatives and metrics.
The clinical pharmacist, generalist is responsible for precepting both pharmacy students and pharmacy residents. The incumbent should embody the mission, vision, and values of the Department of Pharmacy and Michigan Medicine.
Required Qualifications*
Education/ Training:
- Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm.D.) from an accredited College of Pharmacy or BSPharm with commensurate experience.
- License:
- Current license to practice pharmacy in the State of Michigan (including a Controlled Substance license), verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, or eligibility to become licensed within 90 days of employment start date.
- Other:
- Ability to perform a variety of manual dexterity movements, including keyboarding and non-sterile and sterile product preparation. Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English. The job involves considerable standing and walking, as well as extensive work on a computer, along with fatiguing physical motions.
Desired Qualifications*
- Completion of a PGY1 residency and/or BCPS or BCACP certification
- Prior retail or community pharmacy experience is desired, along with prescription insurance knowledge and familiarity with processing
- MTM and/or immunization experience is desired

Licensure & Certification
Current registration as a Registered Pharmacist by the Michigan State Board of Pharmacy is necessary. Possession of a state narcotics license is necessary. This classification requires Primary Source Verification.
Modes of Work
