Begin Your NICU Career in One of the Nation's Leading Level IV Neonatal Centers
The Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit at University of Michigan Health is a 60-bed Level IV neonatal center caring for the most critically ill and medically complex newborns in Michigan and throughout the region. Our team provides highly specialized care to premature infants and newborns with complex medical and surgical conditions, congenital anomalies, respiratory failure, neurologic injury, and congenital heart disease.
As a new graduate nurse, you will join a collaborative, family-centered team committed to clinical excellence, professional development, innovation, and evidence-based practice. Through a structured six-month internship and comprehensive transition-to-practice program, you will develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to care for the most vulnerable patients and families.

Internship Program
Orientation includes:
- A structured six-month precepted clinical experience
- Classroom and simulation-based learning
- Progressive clinical responsibility
- Dedicated support during transition to independent practice
- Exposure to day, evening, and night shifts during orientation
Following successful completion of the internship, nurses will transition to a permanent night-shift role within the Brandon NICU.
A two-year commitment to Brandon NICU, working a minimum of 32 hours per week, is required upon completion of the internship.
Responsibilities*
This is a fast-paced, challenging position in an academic environment fully committed to maintaining EXCELLENCE in family centered newborn intensive care.
The Graduate Nurse Intern will:
- Provide safe, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill newborns and premature infants
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care
- Partner with families and the interdisciplinary team to deliver family-centered care
- Develop advanced neonatal assessment and technical skills
- Utilize critical thinking and clinical judgment in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
- Participate in collaborative patient care and team-based decision making
- Demonstrate accountability for professional growth and ongoing learning
- Engage in quality improvement, research, and evidence-based practice initiatives
Required Qualifications*
- Be a Graduate Nurse or newly licensed Registered Nurse who has not yet practiced independently as an RN
- Have graduated from an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program
- Successfully pass the NCLEX no later than 45 days after the start date
- Complete Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification during orientation
- Submit a complete and current resume

Hourly range for Registered Nurses $43.46 -$67.40/ hour
Evening Shift Differential-$3.00 / hour
Night Shift Differential- $4.00 / hour

Night Shift Weekend Differential- $6.90 / hour
Charge Nurse Differential- $1.00 / hour

Nursing Specific Info
Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.
Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position. Posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period. Applicants who have left the UMPNC bargaining unit must include on their resume dates of past employment including months and years of service along with effort. Positions less than 20 hours/week may be combined.

Modes of Work

Work Schedule
Hours per week: 36
Shift/Hours/Days: Permanent 12-hour night shift assignment will occur after completion of the internship; candidates must work the night shift for 6 months before seeking shift reassignment ; two of four weekends per four-week scheduling period.
Location: Mott Children's Hospital - 8 West, Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit
Must be able to start January 7, 2027
All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
