Job Summary

The William L. Clements Library seeks to hire a full-time, non-exempt Digitization Technician for a 2-year-term National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant-funded position to digitize the Henry Clinton Papers.

The papers include letters, documents, other manuscripts, and published materials pertaining to Sir Henry Clinton's service as commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America from 1778 to 1782. Although the bulk of the papers cover his tenure as commander-in-chief, with particular attention to engagements in New York and New Jersey and the sieges of Charleston and Yorktown, they also document Clinton's earlier military service, efforts to restore his reputation after the war, and to some extent, his personal life.

The digitization technician will work closely with the library's Digital Projects Librarian to prepare materials for digitization, perform in-house digitization, and create preliminary descriptive metadata.

Responsibilities*

  • Perform on-site digitization using a DT Atom camera stand in a low-light environment
  • Create preliminary metadata from folder labels and enter it into spreadsheets
  • Complete post-processing tasks such as cropping, rotating, and stitching oversized items using Capture One and Adobe Photoshop
  • Track project status and communicate regularly with other members of the team

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
  • Experience successfully performing work that requires high accuracy and attention to detail
  • Experience successfully working independently while following established procedures and meeting individual deadlines
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with Windows systems, image editing programs, and spreadsheets
  • Evidence of ability and desire to learn and apply new technical skills related to software and hardware
