Job Summary

Professor Herbert Winful at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to conduct theoretical research in a number of areas including novel schemes for synchronizing semiconductor laser arrays, mode locking in multicore and multi-mode fiber lasers, spatiotemporal dynamics of degenerate-cavity lasers, and the general problem of controlling chaos in nonlinear optical systems. The research will be conducted as part of a Multi-University Research Initiative (MURI) led by Yale University. The ideal candidate would have some background in physical optics, laser physics, nonlinear optics, or nonlinear dynamics, as well as a strong foundation in scientific computing. Some familiarity with machine learning is desirable.

Required Qualifications*

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optics, Physics, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline 
  • A record of scientific publications 
     

Desired Qualifications*

  • Background in theoretical nonlinear optics, nonlinear dynamics, or laser physics
  • A strong foundation in scientific computing
  • Some familiarity with machine learning
  • Capability for pursuing independent research
