Job Summary
The Department of Environmental Health Sciences is seeking a Research Technician Lead for a research project examining environmental quality in the Detroit area. We are seeking a Research Technician Lead to join the NIH/EPA/Michigan-funded Exposure Assessment Core in an exciting and highly innovative project to assess and improve air quality and environmental health in Detroit and southeast Michigan using state-of-the-art methods and advanced technology. While this position is posted as a one-year, term-limited position, renewal is likely given funding availability for this multi-year project.
Responsibilities*
- Operating equipment to measure environmental parameters in outdoor and indoor air, such as particulate matter and black carbon, and driving and operating a mobile laboratory.
- Deploying equipment at indoor and outdoor locations including residences, schools, and Michigan's air quality monitoring sites, conducting indoor walkthrough surveys and interacting with school and household members.
- Maintaining logs, managing datasets, and conducting other computer analyses, and assisting with equipment maintenance and calibration, and maintaining laboratory inventory and research equipment.
- Engaging in outreach and educational activities with community members and students about environmental quality.
Required Qualifications*
- A Bachelor's Degree is required, preferred in a science or engineering area with 2-3 years experience.
- Can operate a vehicle.
- Research experience using laboratory or field instruments and computers.
- A key requirement is an eagerness and ability to learn new skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail, accurate and thorough record-keeping, ability to follow complex protocols, and the ability to prioritize and manage time are crucial skills for this position.
- Other requirements include strong oral and written communications skills, a willingness to work with in a group.
- A successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to efficiently multi-task, able to work independently, and committed to environmental research.
- Some evening and limited weekend work my be required.
