Position Summary:
We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented IT professional to join our team as a Technology Compliance Liaison. This role is central to managing, supporting, and enhancing the technology needs of our student life departments. You will oversee the technology needs of a wide array of Application Specialists, assist with process documentation, ensure compliance with technology standards, and serve as the key liaison between technology, data governance, and the Application Specialists community. You will monitor and review progress and accuracy of work, direct efforts, and provide technical guidance on more complex issues. Responsibilities*
50 % Leadership, Planning, Compliance
- Lead and advise a large and diverse group of Application Specialists across the Student Life departments, guiding them through technical questions and challenges and encouraging growth in their technical skills. Foster a collaborative and positive work environment, ensuring that team members are well-supported and equipped to meet departmental objectives.
- Serve as the first point of contact for Application Specialists, providing technical and compliance guidance as needed.
- Meet with each Application Specialist on a quarterly basis to review performance, challenges, and opportunities for development.
- Perform annual reviews of access control processes for business systems to ensure compliance with organizational standards.
- Manage and track compliance with mandatory data sensitivity training, ensuring that all staff are up-to-date with the latest regulations and practices.
- Standardize and streamline the Access Request process for business systems, ensuring efficient and secure access management.
- Support the Data Governance initiative, particularly in its intersections with the Community of Practice and recommendations from audit reports. Collaborate with other departments to ensure that data governance standards are maintained - data quality, risk management, data security/classifications, data compliance/regulatory control, and data stewardship.
- Community of Practice (CoP)
- Maintain and regularly update the list of Application Specialists, ensuring that all relevant stakeholders are included in the community.
- Co-lead and organize the CoP by coordinating learning opportunities on key topics such as disaster recovery, Continuity of Operations Planning, business process mapping, handling sensitive data, and application specialist best practices.
- Ensure a reasonable cadence of CoP events to foster continuous learning and development across the department.
30 % Documentation
- Collaborate with units to define and document core processes within and outside their business systems, ensuring streamlined and efficient workflows.
- Create, update, and maintain document templates to ensure consistent, high-quality documentation across all systems.
- Oversee the central documentation repository, ensuring that all materials are easily accessible and up-to-date.
- Conduct an initial review of all unit IT documentation, followed by regular yearly reviews to ensure accuracy and relevance.
10% Emerging Technologies
- Oversee and enhance the Student Life Application Specialist Technology Assistant (SLASTA) - a cutting-edge AI assistant built with U-M Maizey. SLASTA is designed to be the first line of support for Application Specialists, answering their technology and compliance-related questions. Regularly assess and improve SLASTA to meet evolving needs and provide more comprehensive resources.
- Advise on the use of GenAI tools and act as the default point of contact within SLTS for AI-related questions.
- Stay updated on the latest advancements in emerging technologies, as well as relevant process automation technologies as they relate to Student Life departmental needs.
10% Professional Development
- Maintain current knowledge of IT policies and procedures, hardware, software, and central technical services. This includes engaging in on-the-job training, attending technical courses or conferences, conducting research, and performing testing.
- Mentor other staff members and actively participate in professional development opportunities.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of years of education and experience (computer-related certifications)
- 2 years experience supporting, leading, and/or supervising non-technical staff performing technical work, particularly in a complex environment with diverse technical skill sets.
- 1 year Experience in creating and managing documentation, ensuring consistency and accessibility.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
- Familiarity with data governance, compliance standards, and technology-related best practices.
Desired Qualifications*
- Familiarity with Business Systems Analysis work, such as analyzing processes and creating process maps and flowcharts.
- Familiarity with AI tools, such as U-M Maizey or similar platforms.
- Extensive knowledge of information technology products and services.
- Experience with computer security and sensitive data protection
- Experience working in a University setting.
- Experience with the U-M information technology environment.
