Job Summary

This position requires a candidate to have knowledge of video and audio signals specific to robotic and
endoscopic surgical equipment, understanding of Windows operating systems and expertise in interfacing
various operating room equipment with different industry platforms. Salient aspects of the job include training
OR staff in the use of robotic surgical equipment, facilitating the transition to the use of next generation
operating room technology as new devices arrive or upgrades occur, providing on-site and after hour's
technical support for the OR staff regarding robotic cases and trouble-shooting technical problems with robotic
equipment.

Responsibilities*

This position is designed to be someone who is a System and System applications expert, with a high degree
of knowledge and skill on the daVinci Surgical system. This individual will facilitate surgical robotic
understanding, so that the surgical team (surgeons, nurse and OR technicians) will be increasingly enabled to
focus more on surgical application and technique and less on the robot in the room. Candidate must have an
advanced understanding of using surgical robotics as well as proficiency in robotic terminology, use of
robotics in clinical applications. The Biomedical Engineering Technician must also be able to train other
members of the surgical team on use of surgical robotics, thereby fostering a universal comfort with this
technology in the hospital.
A candidate for this job must be an effective teacher and communicator, providing OR staff with easily
digestible lessons regarding robotic equipment, with the goal of creating autonomous OR staff and providing
efficient operating room flow by avoiding technical delays. This includes effective interaction and
communication with the nurses, physicians and OR technicians across a wide variety of surgical specialties.
The position also requires efficient multi-tasking and triaging, as the candidate is required to perform all of
these tasks in three facilities: CVC OR, Mott OR and UH OR, although the primary focus will be the UH-OR.
Other responsibilities include setup and facilitation of equipment use during the robotic training on inanimate
and animate models, coordinating the repair and ordering of equipment and supplies as needed for
maintenance and upkeep of robotic equipment.

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • College level coursework in computer science, engineering or a related field.
  • Knowledge of video and audio signals specific to robotic and endoscopic surgical equipment.
  • Understanding of Windows operating systems.
  • Expertise in interfacing various operating room equipment with different industry platforms.
  • Good interpersonal skills, a team-oriented attitude, patience, availability, a service minded orientation, and ability to work independently and effectively multi-task.
  • Effective teacher and communicator skills.
  • Understanding of laparoscopic and endoscopic equipment.
  • Efficient at multi-tasking and triaging.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Expert knowledge of System and System applications, with a high degree of knowledge and skill on the da Vinci Surgical system.  
  • Advanced understanding of using surgical robotics as well as proficiency in robotic terminology, use of robotics in clinical applications and detailed operation of robotics in surgery which would also include an ability to serve as a bedside assistant during actual cases.
  • Bachelor's degree.

Work Schedule

40 hours, 8 hours varied shifts.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the U-M Skilled Trades Union, Inc., which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening
