Job Summary
The Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health (CSEPH) at the University of Michigan (UM) is seeking an experienced analyst to join a NIH-funded project focused on understanding depression and suicide risk over the lifespan. CSEPH is an interdisciplinary population health science center focused on understanding social determinants of health and health inequities. Two of the research strengths within CSEPH pertain to mental health and aging. This project, the Aging, Transitions over the Lifespan and Suicide (ATLAS) Study, examines how major transitions in work, housing, health, and social life relate to suicide risk by leveraging several cohort studies and population-based registries.
The person who fills this position will work with an interdisciplinary team of faculty collaborators from Michigan Medicine, the Institute for Social Research (ISR), the School of Public Health (SPH), and the School of Information. The candidate will interact with faculty from all three schools to implement a computational, data-driven analysis of major life transitions using both textual and quantitative data. The candidate will have opportunities to engage with students and collaborate with other faculty and across the university, including with the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS) and ISR.
Responsibilities*
- Conduct advanced statistical (e.g., multiple imputation, multilevel modeling, longitudinal modeling) and data science analysis (e.g., LASSO, random forest/CART) of large population datasets.
- Co-author research papers for publication and posters and presentations for conferences and workshops.
- Create tables, figures, and data visualizations to support publications.
- Perform data management, data cleaning, and quality control of large, population-based datasets.
- Collaborate with the research team to refine research questions, study design and method approaches.
- Other research duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications*
PhD or equivalent degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Psychology, Sociology, Health Behavior, Statistics, Computer science, Information science, or a related field. 5-6 years of relevant research experience. Strong ability to work independently and work effectively in a research team. Must demonstrate strong scientific writing and communication skills. Proficiency in longitudinal modeling in Stata, SAS, or R. Experience with natural language processing or text analysis. Experience using large population-based epidemiologic studies. Solid knowledge of research principles and a commitment to responsible conduct of research and ethics. Track record of peer-reviewed publication of scholarly work in the area of public mental health.
Desired Qualifications*
Experience using the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), Americans Changing Lives (ACL) Study, or National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) mortality registry.

This position supports a hybrid work schedule, with one day of on-site work per week.
