Job Summary

The Mary A. Rackham Institute (MARI) at the University of Michigan is seeking an HR Generalist - Intermediate. MARI is comprised of three units: the Psychological Clinic, the University Center for the Child and Family, and the University Center for Language and Literacy. Each clinic focuses on a different aspect of mental, developmental, and language/literacy health. We offer services such as individual and group therapy, one-on-one intensive sessions, assessments, testing and evaluations, and resources like free workshops to help members of our community.

Responsibilities*

This position is part of MARI's administrative team (Central Office) and reports to MARI's Director of Operations and Quality Improvement. You will work closely with the Senior Director and alongside committed and knowledgeable colleagues who ensure compassionate and helpful interactions with MARI clients. Day-to-day responsibilities include: 

  • Staff Recruiting & Hiring: Support hiring processes from job descriptions and interviews to salary offers and onboarding. Manage eRecruit and assist with international hires.
  • Trainee Recruiting & Hiring: Coordinate applicant reviews, interviews, onboarding, and evaluations for trainees.
  • HR Operations: Provide support to staff and leadership across clinics. Process personnel actions (job data changes, etc.), uphold labor laws compliance, manage performance reviews and performance improvement plans as needed, support with annual merit process, timekeeping, and payroll activities.
  • Onboarding & Compliance: Conduct orientations, ensure policy compliance, track credentials, and maintain internal HR documentation.
  • Labor Relations: Serve as a liaison with union representatives and help interpret labor contracts.
  • Administrative Support: Update rosters and internal lists, manage web content, and provide general administrative support (purchasing, deposits and expense reports).
  • Participating with Teams and Committees: As part of the MARI team, you will also be expected to participate in all-staff town hall meetings and leadership team meetings. You may be asked to serve on additional committees like strategic subcommittees, wellness, social, and/or process improvement projects.

Required Qualifications*

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or equivalent combination of education and experience working in Human Resources.

Experience/Core Competencies: 

  • 3 or more years of HR experience.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively within a dynamic and multifaceted work environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate independence and flexibility in supporting multiple teams. 
  • Proficient in standard office computer skills: Zoom, Gmail, Google Chat, Google Drive, Google Workspace (Calendar, Forms, Docs, Sheets, Slides), Dropbox, SignNow, Adobe, Google Sites. 
  • Knowledge of MPathways/PeopleSoft platforms. Familiarity with administrative processes, procedures, and systems at the University of Michigan.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Possess a recognized HR certification, such as one from SHRM or HRCI.

Work Locations

The position has a hybrid work schedule with 3 days onsite.
