Division Overview

The HITS Enterprise Data & Information Systems (EDIS) division collaborates with partners throughout Michigan Medicine, the U-M, and the state of Michigan, to create data resources which can be used across the enterprises.  Their work enables enterprise analytics which supports strategic, data-driven decisions by leaders, researchers, clinicians, educators, and administrators.  EDIS provides services across the clinical, education, research, and administrative mission domains and is organized around the following core capabilities:  Data Foundations, Analytics, Health Information Exchange, and Enterprise Data Solutions.

Job Summary

Health Information Technology and Services (HITS) at the U-M Michigan Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Applications Programmer Analyst Senior on its Enterprise Data and Information Services (EDIS), Data Foundations Team.  EDIS Data Foundations is responsible for supporting and building Michigan Medicine's enterprise data ecosystem and application integration activities.  Michigan Medicine's Enterprise Data Warehouse serves as a vital conduit of information to leaders across the institution.  

A successful candidate will have experience with system & platform administration and building infrastructure as code (DevOps).  They will be experienced in data management, database design and development.  Experience should include extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL) data between systems using a variety of approaches like file extracts, enterprise service buses (ESB), ODBC APIs, Restful APIs.  The preferred candidate will have experience working with Microsoft Azure and other cloud technologies.

Responsibilities*

  • Configure, deploy and manage Microsoft Azure Services like Fabric and PowerBI.
  • Integrate Microsoft Fabric with enterprise applications like EHRs and ERPs, as well as legacy reporting systems.
  • Support and administer enterprise data and analytics platforms both in the cloud and on-premises data centers. 
  • Design and maintain scalable data and analytics solutions for healthcare, academic, and research data. 
  • Model information in a way that customers can easily consume it.
  • Work with business analysts to develop key measures that drive University metrics.
  • Write SQL queries that validate the data is accurate and meets business requirements. Work with data experts to ensure that data is stored accurately.
  • Design, build, and support ETL applications that meet our customer's data needs.
  • Actively monitor and respond to production support issues.  Apply upgrades, patches, and security improvements.
  • Proactively recommend application and architecture improvements that will improve the reliability, relevance, timeliness, completeness, and accuracy of the data we support.
  • Collaborate effectively with a team of business analysts, data architects, ETL developers, and DBAs on best practices for all of our solutions.
  • Research and share discoveries about new technologies, frameworks, and architectural approaches to data integration and warehousing.

Required Qualifications*

Requirements for Senior Level

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience. 
  • 5 to 7 years of systems analysis/programming in a business environment.

Requirements for Intermediate Level

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience. 
  • 3 to 5 years systems analysis/programming activities in a business environment.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience with the full software lifecycle of system implementation including requirements analysis, design, implementation, quality assurance testing and documentation.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of demonstrated experience in a related role requiring confidentiality, timeliness, customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, and working independently.
  • Experience in one or more disciplines such as Health Care, Financial, Human Resources, Student Administration, and Sponsored Research.
  • Familiarity with ERP and EMR solutions.
  • Experience building solutions leveraging DevOps frameworks.
  • Experience building data integration solutions that leverage restful APIs or message-based technology.
  • Experience with Microsoft Powershell.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Azure SaaS and PaaS Cloud service offerings.
  • Experience using ETL development platforms like Informatica or MS SSIS.
  • Experience working closely with, or as a member of, enterprise data warehousing teams.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong SQL and Python programming language skills. 
  • Able to work on multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience collaborating with data architects and engineers, report developers, database administrators, systems analysts, application software developers, vendors, and tech support.
  • Knowledge of systems development methodologies including waterfall and agile approaches.
  • Experience developing on, and supporting, relational database management systems like, SQL Server and Oracle.
  • Experience using Git for source control.
  • Experience developing on, and supporting, cloud-native data and reporting services.
  • Knowledge of data warehouse design concepts.
  • Demonstrated skills in data analysis and process modeling tools and techniques.

This position is being made available with the ability for you to negotiate alternative work schedules and remote/on-site options to suit your work-life balance. Background Screening
