The University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology (UMMAA) seeks a Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Museum Registrar for collections, database, and records management activities related to the Museums ongoing NAGPRA compliance efforts.
The target salary for the position is $44,300 to $55,300. A higher salary may be possible based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities*
The Registrar will work with UMMAA collections managers and curators to meet the requirements of updated NAGPRA regulations issued in 2024. They will conduct archival research, inventory and rehouse the Museums Native American collections, help implement Duty of Care provisions, update database records, and field requests for data and information pertaining to said collections.
More specifically, the Registrar will collate and reconcile collections records related to Native American archaeological sites and collections, including electronic databases, reports, correspondence, forms, photographs, images, overview summary documents, and legal documents. They will search records, electronic and hard copy, and provide assistance to external units seeking assistance. These will include the U-M NAGPRA Office, tribal historic preservation officers, other university, museum, and government officials conducting NAGPRA research and compliance.
Required Qualifications*
A successful candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and experience with ethical collections management practices and archaeological material, be highly organized with attention to detail and accuracy, and communicate clearly and respectfully. Possess at least a bachelors degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, Native American Studies, or other applicable degree. A Masters in museum studies is preferred. Knowledge of basic museum practices, procedures, and standards, as well as NAGPRA regulations, required: with 1-2 years of experience working with museum collections.
Ability to be flexible and collaborate in a team environment.
Ability to move and transport materials that could weigh up to 50 lbs, including ascending or descending at heights that require the use of a step stool or ladder.
Desired Qualifications*
Experience working with Tribal Historic Preservation Officers, community leaders, or other Tribal representatives. A background in North American archaeology, human osteology, Native American material culture or NAGPRA compliance. Experience with implementation of the new NAGPRA regulations. Experience using a collections management system, ideally CollectiveAccess.
