Job Summary
The Communication Manager / Executive Communications will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive communication strategy to support the Leadership and CEO's vision and initiatives. This role involves managing various communication channels and crafting compelling narratives that align with Michigan Medicine's values and goals. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in strategic communication, branding, and public relations.
Responsible for informing and educating external and internal stakeholders through publications and mass communication. On-going responsibility for research, writing, editing and producing communications, etc. for the organization. Employees in this classification typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision-making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree.

This role is pivotal in shaping both the internal and external image of our leadership during a transformative period.
Responsibilities*
1. Strategic Communication Planning:
- Develop and implement an integrated communication strategy that enhances the CEO's vision and message both internally and externally.
- Align communication strategies with Michigan Medicine objectives and key business priorities.
2. Internal Communication:
- Lead the development of internal communication campaigns that engage, inform, and inspire employees.
- Collaborate with HR and leadership teams to craft messages that foster a positive organizational culture and promote engagement.
- Collaborate with teams to utilize internal communication tools and platforms to ensure effective message delivery.
3. External Communication and Branding:
- Serve as the primary spokesperson for the CEO, managing media relations and public appearances.
- Develop creative and impactful content for press releases, speeches, interviews, and social media.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders including media, industry partners, and community organizations.
4. Reputation Management:
- Monitor public perception and address any communication challenges or crises effectively.
- Develop strategies to mitigate risks and enhance the CEO's reputation.
5. Content Creation:
- Oversee the creation of high-quality, engaging content that reflects the CEO's brand and company values.
- Collaborate with marketing and creative teams to ensure consistency across all communication channels.
6. Measurement and Reporting:
- Establish benchmarks for communication effectiveness and report on key metrics.
- Use insights to continuously improve communication strategies and tactics.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
- 7+ years of experience in corporate communication, public relations, or a related role.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and presentation skills.
- Proven experience managing communication initiatives and external media relations.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Proficiency in communication and analytics tools.
Modes of Work

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
