Job Summary

The mission of the Student Veterans Resource Center is to provide academic support to the veteran community. VA work-study students play a vital role in this mission, including, but not limited to, assisting peers with GI Bill? benefits and providing support for students transitioning from military to civilian life. This individual would report to the Student Veterans Resource Center Program Manager.

Responsibilities*

  • Assist with basic office functions including assistant with the front desk, answering phones, greeting guests, recording messages for staff, and directing incoming calls and walk-ins.
  • Organize all front desk operations and maintain orderliness of SVRC Lounge.
  • Serve as a PAVE advisor for newly admitted veteran-connected students, assisting in the navigation of the UM-Flint campus and resources.
  • Make referrals to internal and, where necessary, external services, including financial aid, tutorial support, Counseling and Psychological Services, accessibility and accommodations, and testing services.
  • PAVE advisors will participate in training events relevant to veterans.
  • Draft written communications, listserv announcements, flyers, etc.
  • Make calls to current and incoming students regarding events and activities.
  • Assist with workshop planning and implementation.
  • Maintain all records and communications with strict confidentiality.
  • Support and assist Program Manager with orientation and outreach activities.
     

This position may work up to 25 hours per week. It is a great opportunity to network and participate in community events!

Required Qualifications*

  • Must be current UM-Flint student
  • Must be eligible for VA work study funding (student must be using VA education benefits and be certified at least 3/4-time in each enrollment period.
  • Knowledge of UM-Flint campus and VA programs.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and Google Suite

Desired Qualifications*

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Familiarity of student organizations on campus
  • Excellent written and verbal skills

Work Schedule

  • This position will start Summer Term 2025 and has the potential to continue into the 2025-26 academic year depending on office fit.
  • Number of hours per week: 15-20
  • Availability to schedule work hours during Student Veterans Resource Center office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday and assist with special events after 5:00 p.m. as needed.
     

Modes of Work

Hybrid
The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
