Job Summary

The Lifshitz lab is seeking a Research Laboratory Technician Senior who can play a crucial role in supporting the research team by conducting experiments, managing data, and recommending process and protocol improvements.

The Research Lab Tech Senior will provide technical lab support by performing complex laboratory and research related tasks, act as a specialist on laboratory methods and equipment functions, perform a variety of tests requiring a high degree of proficiency, troubleshoot problems and recommend solutions, evaluate experiment results using statistical and multivariate analysis, and they may instruct a laboratory academic section in laboratory techniques, instruments, methods, and procedures.

The Research Laboratory Technician will play a crucial role in supporting the research team by conducting experiments, managing data, and recommending process and protocol improvements. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with strong analytical and communication skills, capable of working independently and as part of a team. Applicant is expected to work with multiple species and special handling procedures (i.e., rotorod or Morris water maze). 

Weekend duties or on-call status as studies require. 

No strenuous activity is necessary, but a tolerance to laboratory animals including the ability to carry out surgical procedures, and tissue collection from animals is necessary. Intense and long periods of concentration at the laboratory bench are necessary to carry out the experimental techniques.  

Responsibilities*

  • Perform independent research experiments in collaboration with the principal investigator and research team, including the use of biochemical, cell and molecular biology, histological, microscopic, microbiological, and/or animal assays. 
  • Perform tasks and analyses similar to confocal microscopy, dual photon/multiphoton microscopy, flow cytometry, and laser capture microdissection. 
  • Draft study designs and timelines. Draft manuscripts, oral presentations, and posters for participation at scientific conferences. 
  • Contribute towards daily activities of the laboratory including standard operating procedures and protocol adherence. 
  • Lifelong learning and reading of the scientific literature. Engagement with printed, online and video content to become a subject matter expert. Leverage learning for discussion and active participation in meetings.  
  • Train students and staff in the operation of equipment and/or in the performance of technical procedures as directed by the principal investigator. 

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree 
  • Minimum 5 years relevant laboratory experience showing progressive responsibility
  • Evidence of responsibility/leadership.

Desired Qualifications*

  • STEM field studies preferred.
  • Master's degree 
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
    • Knowledge of rodent animal behavior, basic biology, care, and handling. 
    • Knowledge of microscopes and histology laboratory techniques. 
    • Knowledge and experience in basic lab techniques detailed in job description. 
    • Ability to work and thrive in a team environment and possess a positive attitude. 
    • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). 
    • Adept at basic computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and statistical and graphing programs (such as Prism, Adobe Photoshop, etc.). 
    • Good problem-solving, basic math, and quantitative and analytical skills. 
    • Able to critically review information and understand instructions and new concepts with minimal assistance. 
    • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. 
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 
    • Focused and well-organized with attention to detail.
