Responsibilities*
The Department of Biological Chemistry in Dr. Ragsdale's lab is recruiting postdoctors to work on ongoing bioinorganic chemistry and biochemistry projects on the enzymatic and bioinorganic mechanism of microbial carbon dioxide fixation, heme metabolism, or on methane making/breaking by methyl-CoM reductase. These projects are funded by grants from NIH and the Department of Energy, respectively. The Ragsdale group is highly collaborative and is committed to an exciting, supportive and respectful research environment. Our research toolbox includes the use of spectroscopy (magnetic resonance, vibrational, optical), structural biology (X-ray crystallography, serial femtosecond XFEL crystallography, neutron diffraction), kinetics (transient and steady state), and in molecular and cellular biology. We have developed novel tools for anaerobic crystallography and for anaerobic structure determination including the active Ni(I) state of MCR and of CO dehydrogenase. Postdoctors in the laboratory have the opportunity to gain a wide range of biochemical experience in mechanistic enzymology, structural biology, and metalloenzyme spectroscopy. Our studies are aimed at uncovering unique biochemical and bioinorganic mechanisms, and novel roles of metals in biology.
In addition, this position will contribute to laboratory seminars and discussions, allowing the candidate to impact the direction of their research project and other projects within the research group. Assist in training of lab members. Contribute to preparing research for publication and ensure that the research is performed according to the best practice in compliance with the University of Michigan and funding agency's guidelines.
Required Qualifications*
PhD in biochemistry or related field with at least 2-3 years of relevant laboratory research experience.
The ability to work productively in a team environment and work with limited supervision to identify a broad range of techniques to achieve the project's primary goal. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to multi-task efficiently, work independently and be committed to research. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
