Purpose:
U-M University Health & Counseling, a unit of Student Life, is a AAAHC-accredited outpatient multispecialty health clinic that serves a large and diverse student body of more than 50,000 students, as well as U-M faculty and staff. UHC provides direct patient care through its primary care and specialty clinics, pharmacy, diagnostics services, as well as public health and epidemiologic surveillance.
Position:
As Laboratory Manager you will oversee the daily management, supervision, and operational activities of the UHS Laboratory, a CLIA-waived high complexity lab performing hematology, immunochemistry, serology, bacteriology, parasitology, molecular PCR testing and urinalysis. Responsibilities*
Operations & Administration (60%)
- Establish and oversee the implementation of all administrative and operational procedures in Laboratory.
- Responsible for an annual budget of $2 million (including salaries, benefits, supplies, office and administrative expenses).
- Design, develop, implement, and maintain Quality Improvement (QI) programs
- Perform various clinical tests for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, including the quality control procedures that pertain to the testing performed, to analyze the effectiveness of laboratory processes and procedures, and to facilitate workflow.
- Oversee the evaluation and purchasing of equipment and supplies, under the general direction of the Facilities Coordinator (or designee).
- Oversee partnership with outside labs utilized by University Health & Counseling (e.g., MLabs Quest Laboratories)
- Liaise with shared services (e.g., SL Human Resources, Business & Finance, Technology Services)
- Execute relevant agreements with internal and external partners (e.g., learners, partial staff appointments)
Management and Supervision (20%)
- End-to-end supervision (hire, orient, train, schedule, coach, discipline) of direct reports.
- Oversee the duties of medical technologists, senior clinical technologists, patient care technician associates, laboratory clerical staff, and other laboratory personnel.
- In partnership with SL Human Resources: address employee concerns, complaints, and grievances; manage salary and compensation; navigate contractual requirements of bargained-for staff
Compliance (10%)
- Ensure laboratory operations are compliant with CUA, HIPAA, OSHA, and other regulations.
- Ensure compliance with institutional, third-party, and federal regulations with respect to Health Information Management (HIM), protected health information (PHI), Occupational Health & Safety
- Administration (OSHA), billing, information technology, and the electronic health record
- Develop and revise policies, procedures, and guidelines relevant for accreditation (AAAHC)
- Oversee tracking license and/or certification status for staff, keeping records of associated expiration dates and notifying staff about renewal timing, as appropriate.
Communication & Reporting (10%)
- Oversee the preparation of special and periodic activity reports on operations, costs, and new program ramifications, and recommend changes for improved operations.
- Serve as a unit liaison to and partners with internal and external stakeholder groups (e.g, MLabs), providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit
Required Qualifications*
- Baccalaureate degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry or related field
- American Society for Clinical Pathology certified MLS, MT or recognized certification, registration or licensure
- 2+ years experience working in all phases of laboratory medicine including microbiology
- 2+ Supervisory experience
- Experience and/or knowledge in budget management

Additional Information
Working Conditions:
- Full-time, in-person, 40 hours/week position, generally coinciding with hours UHS is open (Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm). Occasional coverage of Saturday clinics (9am-12 noon) from Sept-May.
- Location: University Health Service (207 Fletcher St, Ann Arbor 48109).

The salary amount is $77,100-$88,650 - starting salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
Relocation will not be offered for this position.
Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2025 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY25-26 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.
