What You'll Do

The Center for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan is seeking a qualified Marketing Lead responsible for marketing initiatives related to Michigan Online, reporting to the Associate Director of Marketing. The Marketing Lead for Michigan Online will develop, execute, and evaluate strategic marketing plans that grow awareness, engagement, and enrollment across Michigan Online's learning experiences, such as MOOCs, certificates, and other learning and partnership offerings. This role will collaborate with stakeholders across the Center for Academic Innovation (CAI), campus units, and external partners to elevate the University of Michigan's digital learning presence. The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in digital marketing strategy, including search engine optimization (SEO), to ensure Michigan Online content is discoverable, relevant, and competitive.

About the Marketing and Market Strategy Team

The Marketing and Market Strategy team works with all the center's teams to help enhance the center's awareness and reputation and lead enrollments and adoptions of its learning opportunities and educational technology tools.

Responsibilities*

Marketing Strategy & Innovation

  • Develop and lead strategic marketing plans for Michigan Online in alignment with CAI's priorities.
  • Act as a strategic advisor to Michigan Online stakeholders and CAI leadership, contributing to center-wide marketing and engagement strategies, and providing expert consultation on learner engagement, branding, and digital trends.
  • Represent the Michigan Online brand voice and positioning across internal and external meetings and materials.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify, develop, and market new product types and formats for Michigan Online, including microsites, certificates, and other learning experiences.
  • Contribute to product innovation and pricing conversations for Michigan Online, advising on learner demand, market trends, and messaging considerations to support launch and scalability of new offerings.
  • Partner with domain leadership to assess and improve operational processes related to Michigan Online marketing and communications.

Marketing Execution & Optimization

  • Oversee and contribute to the development and implementation of integrated marketing campaigns for Michigan Online learning experience launches, including paid media, email, content marketing, and organic social, to drive learner enrollment and engagement.
  • Partner with Communications and Creative teams to ensure execution of strategic marketing plans, ensuring cohesive branding and messaging across channels.
  • Establish an SEO strategy in partnership with the Communications team to drive traffic to and engagement with Michigan Online.
  • Collaborate with Marketing CRM Specialist Senior to define, execute, and optimize lifecycle email strategies for Michigan Online learners.
  • Collaborate with Product Research and Market Research colleagues to gather insights about learners, platform performance, and competitive trends.
  • Apply analytics and market research insights to shape audience segmentation and full-funnel content strategies, proactively advising center leadership on marketing performance. 
  • Lead the development and presentation of strategic marketing recommendations, plans, and results to internal partners and external stakeholders, influencing decisions at the domain and center levels.

Supervision & Team Collaboration

  • Supervise and manage a Marketing Specialist focused on open online content (MOOC) marketing, supporting performance development, and the optimization of roles and responsibilities.
  • Mentor and identify appropriate training and professional development opportunities.
  • Conduct and manage annual performance reviews.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment that encourages creativity and professional growth.
  • Provide proactive updates to supervisor and leadership.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, business, or a related field, or equivalent combination of degree and professional experience.
  • At least 5 years of digital marketing experience, preferably in online education or higher education, or equivalent combination of degree and professional experience.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing data-informed marketing strategies and campaigns.
  • Strong understanding of SEO principles and tools.
  • Experience with CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce Marketing Cloud), marketing automation, and performance reporting.
  • Strong project management, interpersonal, and written communication skills.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

Candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States. 

The mode of work for this position is Hybrid. The work requirements for this position allow both onsite and offsite work and you will have an expected regular and recurring onsite presence. On occasion, you may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by our center's policy and domain leadership or by your job requirements. 

The salary for this position will be based upon the selected candidate's education and experience.

Salary Information

The general salary range for this position is $90,000 - $100,000. Candidates can expect to be paid a competitive and equitable salary. Factors used to determine salary include education level, experience, knowledge and skills for the position and internal equity within the unit. All candidates are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor alignment and transparency throughout the recruiting process.
