Responsibilities*

This position is responsible for performing telephone triage, screening, and patient education for the occupational health nurse clinic phonelines. Managing Body Substance Exposure evaluation, education, and prevention.Basic Function and Responsibilities: 

This position is responsible for performing telephone triage, screening, and patient education for the occupational health nurse clinic phonelines. Managing Body Substance Exposure evaluation, education, and prevention.  Evaluation of exposures to communicable diseases with appropriate follow-up. Liaison to Infection Prevention and Exposure (IPE).  Performing in-clinic triage of employees who present to Occupational Health Services (OHS). Performing Pre-placement Exams for potential candidates and ensuring all health standards for employment are met. Including interpretation of lab results and knowledge of current immunization guidelines. Effective use of multiple electronic health record systems in use at OHS. 

 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities: 

Essential

  • Answers and triages the Occupational Health Services employee Injury and Illness Calls. 
  • Assessment and triage of employees who present to OHS.
  • Performs pre-placement assessments which includes records review, venipuncture, blood draws, immunization administration, Ishihara testing, and other applicable tests, immunizations and/or vaccinations as applicable.
  • Adheres to the department established protocols, guidelines, and requirements to appropriately manage all cases. 
  • Utilizes defined systems to document clinical findings and order management.
  • Reviews clinical documentation and provides updates as needed. 
  • Demonstrates outstanding customer service skills and phone etiquette.
  • Utilizes technology to support all work. 
  • Collaborates with other members of the team to achieve the ideal patient care experience.

  1. Practices within the scope of license, certification, or registration.
  2. Complies with all applicable continuing education requirements.
  3. Complies with all University of Michigan, Michigan Medicine and departmental policies, procedures, standards, and expectations.
  4. Supports the department?s commitment to continuous improvement activities and principles through positive and respectful contribution in all problem-solving and change processes.
  5. Presence at multiple office locations as assigned.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.No functional or administrative supervision is exercised.

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position. Posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period.

Required Qualifications*

  • RN Licensure in the state of Michigan
  • Minimum of two (2) years (within the past three (3) years) RN experience, providing direct care to adult patients in an ambulatory care clinic setting or inpatient setting.
  • Recent (within 1 year) experience performing venipuncture. 
  • Recent (within 1 year) administering vaccines in the adult population. 

 

Physical Requirements:  

The employee will be able to perform the assigned duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations: ability to work in a sedentary position for long periods of time, long periods of standing, ability to communicate/ exchange information, fine motor coordination/dexterity necessary for keyboarding or typing, and may require reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, moving about, lifting of up to 10 pounds, etc., with or without the use of assistive/adaptive devices.  The employee may be assigned to multiple different work locations as determined by patient care needs and leadership.

Desired Qualifications*

  • BSN
  • Tele-health management skills
  • Ability to manage complex clinical issues utilizing assessment skills, protocols, and evidence-based interventions.
  • Demonstrated skills through the effective use of technology.
  • Experience working in an occupational health setting.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Experience utilizing Cisco Finesse
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills through nursing, excellent problem-solving skills, and ability to set priorities.
  • Demonstrated customer service, interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to build respectful relationships within and between units and individuals.
  • Demonstrated accountability and dependability including good attendance record with punctuality.
    Demonstrated adaptability to changing needs and priorities based on unit, department, and institutional goals/objectives.
  • Proficiency with keyboarding skills and electronic health record documentation

Work Schedule

Hours per Week: 40
Shift/ Hours:  10 hour shifts, day off is variable, possibility of nights, holidays, and weekends. 

Location: Two Ann Arbor locations

Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
