Job Summary

The Department of Psychiatry is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Administrative Manager Associate to lead and support our administrative assistant team and dually be the lead over the human resource processes for the Department of Psychiatry. This position plays a key role in the day-to-day operational support of 250 staff, focusing on HR processes, leave management for faculty as well as direct supervisory leadership skills. The ideal candidate will bring strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills and a solid understanding of HR practices within the academic environment

Responsibilities*

  • Supervise a team of 8 administrative assistants (both on-site and off-site) who support faculty and staff with tasks including complex meeting coordination and expense reporting.
  • Provide administrative supervision including performance management, coaching, evaluations, discipline, and workflow prioritization.
  • Coordinate and manage all faculty leave processes, including parental, maternity, unpaid, and paid leaves, across 220+ faculty.
  • Serve as the departmental resource for in-employment HR matters such as performance concerns, equity reviews, reclassifications, and reduction-in-force procedures.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives and departmental efficiency through problem solving and collaboration.
  • Communicate effectively across departments and organizational levels, maintaining high standards of professionalism and confidentiality.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • Reasonable professional experience with some prior management, supervisory, team leader experience or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising administrative professionals.
  • Experience with HR functions across the employee lifecycle (e.g., hiring, performance management, terminations).
  • Proven ability to coach and support supervisors in HR-related processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attendance and strong work ethic

Desired Qualifications*

  • Familiarity with faculty leave policies and procedures at the University of Michigan Medical School.
  • Experience working in or knowledge of the Department of Psychiatry.
  • Proficiency in University of Michigan systems such as Wolverine Access.

Background Screening
