Job Summary

The Department of Communication & Media at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) invites applications for a tenure track position in the broadly defined area of Media Industries, to begin August 25, 2026. This position will be at the level of assistant professor or tenured associate or full professor.

We seek scholars who can contribute to our understanding of the rapid transformations in media ownership structures, content creation, media technologies, and evolving platforms, and who examine the implications these developments hold for media producers, workers, audiences, and society more generally.

We welcome applicants whose research explores key aspects of contemporary media industries, including but not limited to shifts in media ownership and consolidation, changing labor conditions and practices within media industries, emergent content forms, digital platforms, regulatory environments, and the complex relationships between media, technology, and society. Candidates who address issues related to censorship, freedom of speech, and First Amendment debates from comparative or transnational perspectives are also encouraged to apply.

Rank will be commensurate with experience and scholarly achievement, following the guidelines of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan.

 

Responsibilities*

Job duties include research activity, teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses, mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, and service to the department, school, university, and profession.

The Department of Communication & Media's mission centers on studying and teaching about the evolving media landscape: its industries and structures, effects, everyday uses, and regulatory dynamics. We aim to foster rigorous scholarship that engages with pressing societal issues surrounding the media's role and impact in a rapidly changing world.

This hire reflects our commitment to expanding our research and instructional capabilities in the study of media industries, emphasizing innovative scholarship and instructional excellence. Successful candidates will contribute significantly to shaping and advancing this dynamic area within our department.
 

Required Qualifications*

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in Communication, Media Studies, or a closely related discipline. We seek individuals with strong records of high-level scholarly research and publication, combined with demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentorship at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our department values diverse epistemological and methodological traditions, including quantitative, qualitative, historical, critical-cultural, computational, and multi-method approaches. Candidates may specialize within a particular methodological tradition or adopt a multi-method approach, but must demonstrate a willingness to collaborate in a multidisciplinary and methodologically pluralistic academic environment.

A PhD must be conferred by the start of the appointment.

Modes of Work
