Department Summary:

The Office of Student Accountability (OSA), a unit in the division of Student Life, promotes a safe and scholarly community in which students navigate conduct in an educational and self-reflective manner. OSA offers a spectrum of resolution pathways that are educationally focused and provide agency to students and meets the needs of individuals involved.

Position Summary:

NOTE: This is a 4-year limited term appointment with the potential to be re-evaluated for an extension.

  • Promotes student learning and development through outreach, program management, conflict resolution, and supervision. Responsibilities include education and outreach, case management, and interdepartmental coordination.  Utilizes specialized knowledge of higher education administration, higher education law, student conduct, student development, conflict resolution, and related content areas to deliver on unit mission.
  • Embodies the philosophies and principles of student development theory.
  • As a fundamental part of the team, this position is responsible for competent facilitation of all of OSA's resolution pathways, with particular emphasis on the expert facilitation of formal resolution pathways and understanding of the policies and procedures within the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Responsibilities*

Programmatic Leadership (50%)

  • Manages case processes for the Formal Resolution portfolio which includes reviewing and evaluating cases and reports, delegating and conducting intake meetings, organized and efficient case management, monitoring assigned cases, and supporting Office of Student Accountability (OSA) staff in coordinating and facilitating the resolution of student conflicts using a spectrum resolution pathways (including those referenced in the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities).
  • Evaluates and prioritizes possible courses of action for current cases, makes decisions on case management, and designs and implements appropriate resolution processes while effectively balancing the interests of all parties in addition to broader community needs.
  • Manages, monitors and audits multiple complex student conduct and conflict-resolution cases, using standard student conduct case management softwares and utilizing processes articulated in the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Facilitates appropriate educational and restorative interventions in alignment with Student Life and OSCR learning outcomes.
  • Works with highly sensitive, protected information with discretion and good judgment to maintain student confidentiality and attend to institutional risk-management concerns.

Outreach, Education & Training (25%)

  • Educates students to increase their ability to reflect on personal values, judgment, and decision-making.
  • Participates and contributes to unit meetings and continued training efforts for professional and student staff.
  • Recommends, coordinates, develops and implements educational, procedural, and instructional materials for the training of Arbiters in the OSCR formal conflict resolution process under the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Recommends, coordinates, develops and implements educational, procedural, and instructional materials for Appeals Board training.
  • Utilizes relevant theory, literature, research, and best practices to facilitate conflict resolution across a spectrum of pathways and in the design, development, and implementation of various organizational initiatives.  

Communication With Stakeholders and Partners (15%)

  • Works with campus partners to communicate clear expectations of the processes, coordinate support for parties, and develop relationships that further the mission of education and support for the student community.
  • Interacts with parents, family, care-givers, support persons, and attorneys providing support to students in conduct and conflict resolution processes.
  • Advises members of the University community on various resolution processes.
  • Consults with a broad cross-section of institutional and community stakeholders regarding student conduct issues at large and specific student situations.
  • Provides appropriate referrals for students to all appropriate community resources.
  • Provides outreach-related programs and activities for the University of Michigan. Advises members of the University community on resolution processes.
  • Interacts regularly with faculty, staff, students, family, caregivers, and support persons providing support to students within resolution processes.
  • Consults with community stakeholders regarding student conflict issues at macro and micro levels.

Leadership within Unit & Unit Representation (10%)

  • Provides leadership and support for OSA-coordinated or facilitated processes within the community.
  • Ensures compliance with and education on laws related to the work of OSA, including FERPA, Clery, and Title IX.
  • Engages regionally and nationally in opportunities that showcase OSA?s work and the Program Manager's unique expertise in the field of conflict resolution.
  • Represents OSA on campus committees, task forces, and search committees,  as assigned by OSA leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned by OSA Director or their designee.
     

Required Qualifications*

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree from accredited institution.
  • Experience: Prior case management experience; Prior experience in student affairs or another related field
     

Desired Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, conflict/dispute resolution, legal studies, or a related field.
  • Content expertise in student conduct and investigations  conflict resolution, student development, community development, and engagement.
  • Prior experience utilizing case management database software, such as Advocate or Maxient
  • Ability to develop and implement effective assessment and reporting strategies

Modes of Work

Additional Information

Selected candidates whose start date is after 4/1/2025 or before 8/31/2025 will not be eligible for the university FY 24-25 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
