Job Summary

We are seeking a self-motivated, personable, organized, and detail-oriented Research Area Specialist to support research projects focused on substance use prevention and early interventions among young adults, digital health technologies, and related areas of mental and behavioral health. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to interdisciplinary research while gaining experience in advanced study coordination, data collection, and technology-driven interventions. The Research Area Specialist may also have opportunities to participate in manuscript preparation and abstract presentation at scientific meetings.

Responsibilities*

The Research Area Specialist Intermediate/Associate will assist with a variety of study management and clinical research tasks. 

Key job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating study activities across one or more research projects, including participant recruitment, screening, enrollment, scheduling follow-up sessions, and distributing participant payments, which may require routine travel to/around Ann Arbor, Michigan.
  • Preparing and maintaining regulatory documentation, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, amendments, renewals, and reporting.
  • Developing and updating resources such as standard operating procedures, study protocols, manuals, training materials, and tracking databases.
  • Collecting and managing research data, including surveys, digital health assessments, and qualitative interviews.
  • Assisting with the preparation of project-related reports, manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals.
  • Moderating peer messaging in digital health interventions for intervention study delivery.
  • Training and/or supervising research staff.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, public health, social work, health sciences, or a related field
  • Flexibility to work a varying schedule, with occasional evening and weekend shifts and shared coverage for risk assessment during active study periods to meet participant needs

Research Area Specialist Intermediate level: Minimum 4 years of research experience involving human participants or health services research

Research Area Specialist Associate level:  Minimum 1 year of research experience involving human participants or health services research

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in psychology, public health, social sciences, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating or managing research projects, or administering behavioral interventions in research settings
  • Experience with IRB processes, survey platforms (e.g., Qualtrics), and data management systems
  • Experience training and/or supervising research staff

Work Schedule

This position is full-time (40 hours per week) with regular hours as discussed with the supervisor. Because this position requires some in-person work in Ann Arbor, Michigan, reliable transportation is required.

Additional Information

This is two-year, term-limited appointment with funding for this position supported through September 2027. This position has the possibility of extension depending availability of funding. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits.  This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

In addition to the screenings indicated above under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
