Job Summary

The Chief of Staff (COS) to the EVPMA & CEO of Michigan Medicine serves as a key strategic advisor, confidant, and operational leader, supporting the EVPMA & CEO in advancing Michigan Medicine's academic health system mission encompassing University of Michigan (U-M) Health (the Academic Medical Center and Regional Network), University of Michigan Medical School, and the additional partnerships that comprise U-M Health's statewide clinical network.

The COS drives strategic alignment, organizational effectiveness, and executive decision-making while overseeing the Office of the EVPMA & CEO and partnering with university leadership and the U-M Board of Regents to advance institutional priorities.

Responsibilities*

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Enterprise Alignment

  • Advise and represent the EVPMA & CEO in internal and external forums.
  • Translate strategic vision into actionable plans and track execution across academic health system.
  • Partner with the Dean's Office of the Medical School to ensure alignment with Michigan Medicine's Strong BASE, Bold Future strategic priorities.
  • Facilitate planning and implementation for all clinical and academic leadership meetings led by the EVPMA & CEO, including the monthly CEO/Dean/Chairs Strategic Planning Meetings.
  • Drive enterprise-wide initiatives, including statewide integration, funds flow, and academic health system alignment.
  • Lead planning for strategic meetings and monitor progress on multi-year priorities and key initiatives.

Executive Operations & Organizational Effectiveness

  • Direct operational, administrative, and strategic functions of the Office of the EVPMA & CEO.
  • Manage executive office staff and optimize workflow, scheduling, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Lead high-priority enterprise initiatives, including major consulting partnerships and integration efforts.
  • Ensure disciplined follow-through on priorities, decisions, and commitments.

Governance, University, & Board Relations

  • Oversee governance processes for the U-M Health Board, ensuring effective communication and alignment among Office of the EVPMA & CEO, Office of the U-M President, and the U-M Board of Regents.
  • Partner with the EVPMA & CEO, the U-M Health Board Secretary, and the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) on planning and preparation for U-M Health Board and U-M Board of Regents meetings, including setting and communicating agendas, development and review of materials, presentations, and briefings, and comprehensive documentation of progress toward governance-approved financial and operational goals.
  • Coordinate with University leadership to align and advance major university initiatives involving Michigan Medicine, including strategic research and educational investments (e.g., high-performance computing) and the Look to Michigan campaign.
  • Ensure effective execution of Board directives and maintain follow-up tracking mechanisms to guarantee accountability.

Financial & Strategic Planning

  • Support enterprise-level financial and capital planning; participate in capital oversight processes.
  • Partner with Finance on budget strategy and performance monitoring, including budget planning for shared services and administrative units.
  • Provide executive guidance and decision support on funds flow and resource prioritization.

Development & External Engagement

  • Serve as primary liaison to Development for donor strategy, event planning, and philanthropic priorities.
  • Co-develop agendas and materials for advisory groups and donor engagements.
  • Represent the CEO with internal and external partners, ensuring aligned institutional messaging.
  • Coordinate with Government Relations and Communications to prioritize engagements and activities for the EVPMA & CEO, and to ensure cohesive institutional representation across audiences.

Leadership Collaboration & Culture

  • Partner with executive leaders to drive cross-functional coordination and performance.
  • Support leadership accountability, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement.
  • Foster a culture of inclusion, engagement, and shared accountability across Michigan Medicine, including University of Michigan (U-M) Health (the Academic Medical Center and Regional Network), University of Michigan Medical School, and the additional partnerships that comprise U-M Health's statewide clinical network.

Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and manage performance dashboards for key enterprise initiatives.
  • Monitor and communicate progress on tripartite performance metrics and strategic goals.
  • Drive process improvement and benchmark performance against peer academic health systems.

Required Qualifications*

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration, finance/accounting, or related field required.
  • Graduate degree in healthcare administration, business, public health, or law preferred.

Experience

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership in a large, complex academic health system.
  • Demonstrated success in leading large-scale, multi-faceted projects related to growth, integration, driving strategic alignment, organizational transformation, and operational excellence.
  • Demonstrated experience in governance, executive support, financial stewardship, and stakeholder management.

Work Schedule

  • Full time, onsite, and based in Ann Arbor at Michigan Medicine's main campus.
  • Requires flexibility to attend evening/weekend events and periodic travel to regional sites (e.g., Lansing, Grand Rapids).
  • High-intensity environment with competing demands requiring agility, discretion, and sound judgment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
