Job Summary

The NSF-supported Center for Land Surface Hazards (CLaSH) at the University of Michigan is seeking a creative, dependable, and detail-oriented Marketing and Media Assistant. This position will play a pivotal role in coordinating a broad range of social media and marketing activities to support the Center's mission of transforming how communities understand and prepare for land surface hazards. The Marketing and Media Assistant will continually seek fun and innovative ways to boost engagement and build the Center's social media community, support event coverage, and help maintain a consistent and compelling digital presence.

Responsibilities*

  • Assist with the coordination and scheduling of marketing campaigns across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and emerging social media platforms.
  • Brainstorm and develop creative strategies to enhance community engagement and awareness of the Center and its initiatives.
  • Write grammatically correct, well-worded, and engaging posts tailored for each social media platform.
  • Attend special events as needed to take photographs and gather marketing content.
  • Collaborate with staff to obtain information about events, meals, news, and promotions for content creation.
  • Organize and maintain a content calendar for regular and timely social media posts.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of social media activities, using insights to strengthen community
    engagement and reach.
     

Required Qualifications*

  • High School diploma
  • Creative thinker, able to generate new engagement strategies.
  • Friendly, curious, and professional demeanor.
  • Dependable, with an ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
  • Effective communicator, able to work collaboratively with faculty and staff.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms and management tools.
     

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Graphic Design, or related field
  • Experience with graphic design programs (such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools).
  • Prior experience in social media, marketing, or communications in an academic, scientific, or nonprofit setting preferred.
  • Experience capturing and editing photos for use in digital communications.
  • Interest in earth and environmental sciences, geoscience, or hazard mitigation and communication.

Modes of Work

Background Screening
