Course Description
ALA 114 (Critical Approaches to Research and Communication) is a community membership course. This course introduces first-year MRADS students to responsible research practices and effective communication. Topics include participatory research, procedural justice, and intellectual property. Students will develop skills in managing citations, visualizing data, and public speaking, culminating in presenting their own research to a broader audience.
Responsibilities*
The graduate student instructor will attend all class meetings and work with the faculty instructor to communicate with students regularly and hold office hours and other irregularly scheduled meetings. The graduate student instructor will be responsible for grading all assignments and posting grades weekly to the Canvas gradebook. The course meets Tuesdays from 4:00PM - 5:00PM each week; the GSI should be available to attend those meetings, and hold office hours weekly. The GSI should also be able to respond to student emails within 1 business day.
Required Qualifications*
To be considered, candidates must be enrolled and in good standing in an LSA graduate program. Suitable candidates will be able to work with students from all backgrounds, demonstrate empathic concern for all students, and support students through the semester.
Desired Qualifications*
The ideal candidate will have experience as an instructor of a similar course. The ideal candidate will also have practical experience in STEM curricula as a student. The candidate will have practical knowledge of and/or experience with both quantitative and qualitative methods. LSA graduate students are preferred.
Modes of Work

Decision Making Process
The faculty instructor will review all applications and interview suitable candidates prior to making a final decision. MRADS will make reasonable efforts to extend offers to successful applicants by Dec 8, 2025. Offers will typically be extended at least twenty-one (21) calendar days prior to the start of employment.
Selection Process
Candidates will be evaluated using the qualification criteria above. Applicants should also possess a strong desire to work with first-year undergraduates and have interest in research.
