Responsibilities*

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

To perform activities relating to or supporting the preparation, compounding, packaging, storing, recording, processing, dispensing, labeling and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies under the supervision of a pharmacist, supervisor or resident.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential:

  • Demonstrates proficiency and skill with pharmacy and health system information systems
  • Accurately interpret prescriptions and information on medication labels and containers
  • Participate in the documentation of patient care activities within the health record
  • Accurately, prepare, compound, and label sterile and non-sterile medications for dispensing in all C&W locations
  • Stock and maintain pharmacy inventory
  • Maintains, dispenses, stores all controlled substances and associated records as required
  • Prepare and deliver investigational drugs per research protocols
  • Assist with use of automated dispensing cabinets and pharmacy workflow systems
  • Participate in audits and inspections which support regulatory and compliance standards
  • Effectively communicate with other pharmacy team members, physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals, health-system employees, patients, families, and visitors
  • Respond to internal and external customers demonstrating service excellence
  • Transport medication safely and securely
  • Resolve routine medication-related discrepancies and escalate appropriately when necessary
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor or pharmacist to assist with preparation and delivery of patient medications and other patient care needs

The percentage mix of these duties will vary depending on the functional area where the employee is assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Functional supervision is received from a Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technician Coordinator, or Pharmacy Manager or designee.  Administrative supervision is received from a Pharmacy Supervisor, Pharmacy Manager or other designated official.

Required Qualifications*

  • Completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program is desirable.
  • Pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date: this position requires primary source verification of licensure.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability

  • Pharmacy Technician Associate:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
    • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
    • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability.
  • Pharmacy Technician Intermediate: 
    • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
    • One or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
    • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
    • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability
  • Pharmacy Technician Senior
  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
  • Two or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability

Licensure & Certification

?The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed.

Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.?

Modes of Work

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
