Job Summary

The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) is hiring two full-time, temporary Field Data Collectors to observe seat belt use among motorists in the Toledo, Ohio area as part of a project for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Successful candidates must be punctual, have reliable transportation, possess a valid driver?s license, and be comfortable using a computer tablet. Candidates should also be comfortable performing work outside for long periods of time in various weather conditions, particularly cold weather conditions, and be available between January 19, 2026 and March 6, 2026. No prior experience is necessary. Comprehensive training and supplies will be provided.

Responsibilities*

  • Traveling to designated data collection locations in the Toledo area to observe vehicles, drivers, and passengers.
  • Accurately enter and record seat belt usage, and other needed data collected, using a computer tablet.
  • Communicate, as needed, with the data collection supervisor.

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver?s license and reliable transportation
  • Willingness to work outdoors and remain in a stationary position for the duration of each shift.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Professionalism, punctuality, and attention to detail.

Modes of Work

This position is classified as onsite/location. Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • This work will take place outdoors and may be subject to various weather conditions, particularly cold weather conditions.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position during the entire shift.
  • Requires the ability to travel to various locations to conduct work.

Background Screening
