Job Summary
This research project examines the impact of problem-oriented policing on community safety and crime reduction. By implementing a series of community events and targeted intervention programs, the project aims to foster stronger relationships between law enforcement and the community while developing data-driven strategies to enhance public safety. The Research Assistants will be needed for Winter 2026 and Summer 2026 semesters.
Responsibilities*
The Research Assistants will work closely with Dr. Melissa Sreckovic on data collection (e.g., conducting interviews with community members), data organization (entering data), data analysis, reporting findings, and setting up and volunteering at community events.
Specific duties include:
Events (e.g., Officer Friendly Day, Harvest Fest, Touch a Truck, Inclusive Halloween)
- Help with setting up events
- Prepare materials
- Collect Data at events (e.g., interviews and observational data)
Data organization
- Enter data
Data analysis
- Identify themes in qualitative data; plot single case design data
Dissemination
- Support writing results of studies for publication, create PowerPoint presentations, create websites, and create visually appealing reports.
Required Qualifications*
- Must be a current Undergraduate UM-Flint student. Students with interest in understanding problem-oriented policing and engaging with the community
- Strong Communication and Interpersonal Skills (ability to approach community members and ask them to complete surveys)
- Outgoing personality, including the ability to communicate and work with diverse constituents
- Professional demeanor
- Ability to meet deadlines and work independently
- Strong written skills
- Technology skills are strongly preferred (ability to create engaging, professional PowerPoints; ability to create a website)
Work Schedule
Work schedules will be decided in consultation between Dr. Sreckovic and each student.
Modes of Work
Hybrid
The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
Background Screening
