Job Summary
The Arctic LTER is seeking a full-time employee to process, maintain, and archive long-term ecological data. In addition to information management responsibilities, we are seeking someone
to work in an analytical lab setting to generate and synthesize data. There is also the possibility of summer field work at a remote arctic research station to deploy and maintain a network of
dataloggers.
Desired Qualifications*
Education & Experience
- Bachelor?s or Master?s degree in Information Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Data Management, or a related field.
- Previous experience with data management in a research, laboratory, or field setting, preferably in environmental sciences or related disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience working with large, complex datasets and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with data repositories including dataset formatting and uploads.
- Database management and cloud storage experience ? managing, updating, and archiving datasets both online and locally.
- Version control experience, especially with GitHub; ability to maintain code repositories (R, Quarto, modeling code).
- Bibliographic management using Zotero or similar tools.
- Website maintenance ? updating links, content, and basic troubleshooting (experience with content management systems is a bonus).
- Familiarity with analytical laboratory instruments (e.g., for water quality analysis)
- Statistical and data analysis skills ? proficient in R (required for maintaining R scripts), plus experience with creating and processing large chemical/environmental datasets.
- Experience with dataloggers (Campbell, etc.), radio communication equipment, and automated data collection systems.
- Knowledge of environmental sample collection, processing, and archiving protocols.
Communication & Collaboration
- Strong ability to train and support colleagues in data management best practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to document and synthesize procedures, datasets, metadata, and protocols.
- Experience attending and contributing to network meetings (example: LTER information manager meetings) and community activities.
- Exceptional attention to detail for maintaining personnel lists, datasets, bibliographies, and project-specific data.
- Skilled at managing multiple tasks and priorities (e.g., ongoing data uploads, updating legacy datasets, field and lab support).
- Problem-solving abilities; proactive in troubleshooting instrument or data issues.
Other Considerations
- Fieldwork readiness: Willingness and ability to travel to remote field stations (Toolik Field Station, Alaska) and work in challenging conditions.
- Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a diverse and geographically distributed team.
- Commitment to supporting the mission and values of the Arctic-LTER and the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) network.
Modes of Work
